webfact
Government eyes 3.03 trillion baht revenue from tourism next year By Thai PBS BANGKOK: -- The government has set a target to earn as much as 3.03 trillion baht from tourism industry for 2017 with emphasis on “quality” tourists instead of quantity, said government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd on Sunday. He said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has wanted tourists to spend longer and worthy time in Thailand, especially in Bangkok. Under the slogan of “Amazing Thailand 2018”, he said the government would seek cooperation from private and government sectors, tourism operators, shopping malls and airlines to join in the activities to promote tourism and to attract more tourists into the country with emphasis on tourism to learn the Thai way of life. the guest
Sorry, but Thailand are out of their league in attracting 'quality' tourists. There are many other places in the world where 'quality' tourists visit.
Dexlowe
Once again, long on rhetoric, short on detail. Sounds like they might have more success stationing officials at immigration checkpoints and weeding out any arrivals who aren't wearing an Armani suit. Dave67
I find it distasteful when the amount of money made from Tourism is constantly referred to, They have nothing else to shout about I suppose

At the stroke of a pen, and especially with article-44 now available to make these things easy, the PM might actually do something to help ? And if he still has time before coffee, then abolish 90-day reporting, replacing it with a requirement merely to report one's change-of-permanent-address to Immigration, instead ? And tell Immigration to forget about TM-28s & TM30s, too ? In summary, the Prime Minister has it well within his powers, to actually make Thailand more-attractive to longer-staying tourists of the type he apparently wants to encourage, so please stop making announcements like this one and just do it ! thesetat2013
isn't this like 1 trillion more than this year boasted tourism dollar expectancy? the only way they will get so much is to raise prices for tourists.. Good luck with this fantasy
anon789561
it's unfortunate but many of the kind of 'quality' tourists they refer to are able to read the endless stories that come out of thailand. they can hide things away here but not where these 'quality' tourists are coming from. well to do family holiday makers have plenty of destinations to choose from that they haven't recently seen in the news for things such as, seriously questionable safety standards across the spectrum of activities available, extortion, the harboring of foreign criminals, numerous deaths under highly suspicious circumstances. the authorities need to understand that until it sorts out the deep rooted corruption within the police that allows these things to happen, many of the well to do tourists that they are targeting won't 'risk' coming to a place like thailand
Get Real
I can clearly see that they succeeded with the quality tourists gig. Snatching, grouping, fighting and getting mad as usual still rules. Why change a good concept.

mania
People do not come to Thailand for Quality they come for cheap It is not likely Thailand will ever attract true quality tourism Why would it when so many true quality destinations exist? mikebell
Why don't they go after long-term retirees? We have at least 65,000 baht per month to spend. Sooner or later the penny will drop & they will recognise that Malaysia & Vietnam are cornering this market. Allow home ownership; easier long-term visas; scrap 90 day reporting & other peripheral nonsense; abolish corrupt police who see tourists as cash cows to be milked. madmitch
This article could have been regurgitated from similar announcements from the past ten years. If anything the quality has gone down during that time and as for getting people to stay longer, well that went out of the window when they started to court the Chinese tour groups, meaning arrival numbers are up but hotel nights are probably down. The feeling among many in Phuket is that the Chinese and, to an extent, the Russians will almost completely replace Western tourists in the not-too-distant future. I don't know about the rest of Thailand, though I really can't see too many quality tourists staying in the arse-end-of-nowhere towns and provinces that the Government are looking to promote. Tchooptip
So answer for any argument with anyone in Thailand: Do you know who I am? ...It would be better for you to know! After you have ticked off the Grand Palace, realized you do not want to visit another temple, seen the shopping plazas are more expensive, and often the same shops as back home. When you have tried the river taxis, the skytrain and underground and found them horribly crowded and they don't go many places and discovered the few taxi drivers who do understand you also don't have working meters. And the heat, the pavements, the difficulty crossing a road......
