Handicapped teen locked up like an animal "because we love him" say aunt and uncle

A 14 year old handicapped boy pictured on the internet like he was in an animal pen is in a loving home, it was claimed yesterday.

Pictures of Jonas, 14, on Mem Pho Dam caused widespread concern as he waited helplessly in a darkened room.

Yesterday Sanook reported that the local authority and phu yai ban went to check up on the youngster who is both mentally and physically handicapped.

It emerged that he has hospital and extra care from the authorities on a continuing basis.

He is looked after by his aunt and uncle who said that they are farmers. When they are out in the fields in the day it is necessary to lock him up for his own safety as once he escaped and they had to search the district.

They love him dearly, though they are trying to get him taken into permanent care.

They said there is no abuse or neglect. Someone is around in the day to look after him and when they return from their fields in the evening they put him to bed with them.

Sanook didn't explain why it was necessary to keep him in the "pen" when he had a carer in the day.

"This is one of those sad stories where the aunt and uncle are likely trying to do the best thing they know seeing that there is no real social facility in Thailand for situations like this."

"Just one of the many sad stories over here,no welfare system=very little hope for these people"

"The relatives are trying to do their best or so it seems  &  now maybe the hospital & some social services can help."

The original article states clearly  "It emerged that he has hospital and extra care from the authorities on a continuing basis."

and also "Sanook didn't explain why it was necessary to keep him in the "pen" when he had a carer in the day."

And on that basis, the story changes somewhat. Perhaps they are ashamed of him.

He can't be that physically disabled if he was able to run away before.

There is no excuse for this.

They could take him with them to the rice fields or to work.. like many Thai people do with their children.  They could let monks at a local temple take care of him during the day, or they could get friends or family relatives to help.

Even locking him in the house with a TV, music, food and water... is better than locking him in that pen which is not even fit enough to keep chickens!

Yawn, your post takes the annual award for most off topic post.

A very sad and sensitive story and you try to turn it into a negative political diversion.

If you really had to post why not say something compassionate about the actual story.

You got nothing better to do?
