Popular teacher praised as he shows great respect on his last day

Alumni from a school in Ratchaburi praised a teacher who retired yesterday after a long career teaching engineering.

Pictures showing Paithoon Reuangjui bidding farewell to Phothawattana Seni school were shared across social media.

He touched the hearts of many and his final gesture was a "graap" to the school where he gave many years of service. The gesture is one of reconciliation and forgiveness as well as thanks and is deeply symbolic as a parting in Thai culture.

Many comments were posted online from former pupils who said they had been inspired by the popular secondary teacher known affectionately as "Kru Jui".

This is the time of year when many teachers and other civil servants reach compulsory retirement age and leave their employment.

Yes, not just anyone can do a huge 'graap'. It shows the ultimate respect. Much like wying and saying sorry. The person obviously means it because it's physically impossible to do otherwise.

He doesn't look that old. Why does he have to retire? Or I'd it to make room for new teachers?

Because those who make these rules have no idea about retaining (voluntarily) valuable experience.

A quote attributed to Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader - "Rules are for the obedience of fools and for the guidance of wise men".

Absolutely smashing quote.

Obviously this rule breaking is easier to do if you come from a good family.

Intersing to see on his wiki page:

"Although there were no regulations applicable to his situation, he was retired against his will on medical grounds."

He was also forced to retire, from the airforce. After his disability and before ww1. Interesting chap.

Physically disabled yes, certainly not mentally disabled! A tough cookie I think.

His quote is one of my two favourites - the other attributed to Albert Einstein -  "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

Strange how these 'quotes' seem suited to Thailand. A coincidence?  :whistling:
