By The Nation

An attempt by police to arrest drug suspects led to a car chase with shots fired in Samut Prakan , but no arrests and seizure of only a small quantity of drugs around 30 minutes after midnight on Friday morning.

Gunfire disturbed local residents who witnessed an SUV chasing and firing at a pickup truck in a pursuit that started from behind the office of Tambon Bang Chalong Administrative Organization and ended inside Soi Bang Chalong near Thepharak road.

Local residents alerted the Bang Plee police station, which dispatched officers to the scene to find a pickup and a Toyota Fortuner parked in front of Ruabin Market on Thepharak Road in Tambon Bang Chalong of Bang Plee district.

There were bullet holes in the pickup’s doors, windshield, right front and rear tyres and left rear tyres.

A food vendor living at the spot where the two vehicles were left told police that he saw the the speeding pickup stop suddenly and three men, a woman and two children jump out of the truck.

Two men carrying the children fled in a taxi wihile the woman and another man ran inside the market while being chased by four men from the SUV.

While Bang Plee police were inspecting the two vehicles, four men returned to the SUV and identified themselves as investigators from the Provincial Police Bureau 1 trying to make a drugs arrest.

The four said undercover police had tried to purchase drugs from the group but they fled when officers tried to arrest them. Police gave chase, firing at their pickup’s tyres.

Police later found 300 meth pills in the pickup.

One assumes that the undercover police trying to but the drugs were aware that there were children in the vehicle, so opening fire on it, seems unbelievably stupid. Drugs or no drugs, injured or dead children would not have gone down well.
