I have a Windows 7 activation key which I bought almost 2 years ago on Reddit.

Today it shows that my Windows isn't genuine and need to validate today.

I enter key again, and it doesn't validate.

It then offers to validate over the phone and offers a 001-800 number.

I call and True says my direct international call service isn't activated.

So I call True support.

By the way they have now made calling support a bit more inconvenient, and you have to follow a menu and press at least 5 times an extension number ( I lost count actually) before you get to speak with an operator.

Next I am informed that 001-800 numbers are NOT free on True. Everywhere in the civilized world they are free, but not on True move.

So since I have no idea where I'm calling to, and how long this activation gonna take to complete, it might be an expensive operation.

Anyone can advice please?

Last time I had to do a phone activation I got a Singapore number (not free) but it was a while back.

Which variant of W7 do you have (Pro, Enterprise etc etc)?

I have the Ultimate N.

I get the Singapore number as well, and it is marked as not free.

When I start my PC a browser windows pops up with this address, but I feel it is not a genuine Microsoft website.

I try to upload a screenshot, but the forum doesn't allow me.

Well it's certainly a Microsoft site, and it comes up with an error for me as I have W10.

Can't hurt to try it.

If you do want to do phone it takes a few minutes, you need to be sat in front of the machine as you call, they do ask for the source of the CD key (ok they did me but it was a Microsoft Partner code).

It asks me to download a file

Download Required Windows Validation Components

The software that you are about to download works with most browsers and enables Windows validation. Once installed, it will detect whether Windows is genuine and properly licensed. If needed, it will also attempt to repair Windows 7 licensing components that may have been damaged, moved, or deleted. From time to time, this software will also perform a validation check to make sure that Windows 7 running on your PC is genuine and stays that way. View the privacy statement.

What worries me is that the " lock" at the front of the URL has a orange triangle, and says not secure connection.

For the time being, the easiest way to remove the message is to reset activation. You can do so by simply running this MBR Regenerator; https://mega.nz/#!RJdggSzL!FeZahApMDvOBgvTtLU4nth-LpKpsOeOwiG2yTBXOohE

It will return it to it's original Trial version(without affecting your files). At which point you can use your Reddit key to activate. If your key no longer works, we can update the firmware on your PC to ensure permanent activation.
