Swift action saves homes from more flooding

By The Nation

Authorities had to take urgent action to protect several communities in Chainat province from flooding on Tuesday morning.

Officials decided to release a large amount of water from the Chao Phraya Dam in Sappaya district after floodwaters started flowing into it at high speed.

Water was flowing into the dam at 3,044 cubic metres per second at 8 am and the upstream water caused the water level of the upstream Chao Phraya above the dam to rise by 7 centimetres to about 17.47 metres above the sea level.

That would have caused the river to burst its banks and inundate several communities, so the authorities increased the rate of water release by 100 cubic metres per second from 2,598 cbm to 2,698 cbm per second, causing the water downstream from the dam to rise to 16.03 metre above the sea level.

Had the authorities not acted so swiftly there was a severe danger of further flooding to Tambon Bang Luang, Tambon Taluk, Tambon Sappaya, Tambon Had Asa, Tambon Pho Nangdam Ok and Tambon Pho Nangdam Tok in Sappaya district, which have already been flooded for more than two weeks.

The floodwater level there would have risen by another 25 centimeters, according to officials.

So far 2,800 houses and 16,000 rai of farmland in Chainat have been hit by flooding.

Is there some kind of conspiracy of silence with this whole situation? Bangkok Post yesterday had the the headline 'Central Plains Braces for SEVERE flooding' Well, thats where I live and thats the area that got shafted in 2011!!! The article painted a pretty grim picture...What about the tides? Isnt that what set it all of back then? What is REALLY happening?

So in tomorrows news let's see how the Authorities handle the increased volume downstream.

I think we have the answer.

The only measure I believe is my home made level stick stuck to our outside wall.

Currently 30cm to go before the "water in the house" marker, tides are indeed going to be the factor.

Ok, where abouts are you....without having to be too specific. When will the tides have a real affect? Obviously its a cyclical thing that I dont really fully understand. Any more info apprectiated.

I'm also in the 30 cm area re water in the house

Just hope tides in the Gulf are at max now

We're about 12k downstream from Bang Sai. The river is definitely tidal here, we often see the rafts of water hyacinth going the "wrong" way.

"What is REALLY happening?"  Who knows and I suspect the "authorities" don't really know either.

More tide tables can be found here.

Great.

What we really need is some relationship between the high at the port and the high 50km inland

There's obviously a delay but I can't find any site that can put a number to it.

Whenever an area is flooded in Thailand, they always show pictures of a flooded 7-11 shop. Since you are 5 km from the nearest 7-11 store, you should be safe Crossy.

The last thing people think about right now is moving the car and machinery to higher ground. Many think cars and trucks can swim and float.

(So says the local village headman.)

You could ask the Marine Dept, they should know. (Try Harbour Master's office)

Or you could make out the delay yourself,

you did have a yardstick on your house? Compare the times for when your stick peaks

with the times in the tables.

(however, I'd expect southerly strong winds having a significant effect on the delay)

Fishing in the flood water. Actually she caught some giant water snails, can we eat them? Mega-escargot

Level was about 20cm from water in the house, it's gone down somewhat over night (tidal effect methinks).

the high tides are now being reduced day by day since yesterday's peak

there is still an unknown factor, the release of water from dams further upstream

again, they seem to have started too late to release water - so the dams are filling to the brim

Just like 2011 it's like watching a slow motion train wreck, at least these's time to prepare unlike the poor souls up north with the flash floods.

The DIY level indicator, Level 0 is the lowest area of the house as confirmed by my laser level, annoying but no damage, 10cm above that and we are wet footed.

200 sandbags and a 300m roll of plastic sheeting to waterproof the sandbag wall are ready. Sump pumps on standby, we will not be beaten.

Meanwhile much of the village now has water to their upper level  No doubt we will have visitors later, they are welcome to a dry floor, sadly they will probably drink my beer too.

You're going to provide beer to 'refugee' snakes and water monitors? :cheesy:

Have to give it to you, you're prepared and organised.

A while back we were losing eggs and the occasional chook to our local monitor.

Unfortunately (for him) Wifey had installed some stone eggs to encourage broody hens to start laying again, Mr Monitor was last seen doing an impression of a submarine and said stone eggs were never to be seen again.

"...Mr Monitor was last seen doing an impression of a submarine ..."  Same same as chinese submarines? :cheesy: Hope the sailors remember to close the conning tower hatch.

I'm closer to wet feet than you are.

The high tide peak was yesterday.

When I went to bed last night the water level was going down.

This morning, up significantly, and has been going up all day.

Wonder if they are increasing the release from dams further upstream.

Don't like this at all.

Went to bed with some reluctance.

Great sleeping a few hours, have just checked, water has gone down about 10 cm during the night.

Suits me fine.

No southerly winds and no heavy rain and no increase in release from upstream dams ought to do the trick.

This is going to be the killer.

I've about given up on the blurred, ambiguous, contradictory, apocryphal and wildly inaccurate (c. Douglas Adams) and just plain wrong (mis) information coming from the various government departments.

We echo your overnight drop, long may it continue. But with the reports of flash flooding up-north again ...
