The OrBorJor Phuket has announced it will launch another auction to supply Phuket lifeguard services offering a budget of 16 million Baht. The date shall be confirmed within this month.

Meanwhile, Satien Kaewpraprab, deputy secretary of the OrBorJor Phuket revealed that the organisation has been hiring individual lifeguards to station at 7 beaches which started on November 1, including Nai Harn Beach, Yanui Beach, Kamala Beach, Patong Beach, Surin Beach, Bangtao Beach, Nai Thorn Beach and Maikhao Beach. The total number of lifeguards at the 24 spots around the 7 beaches is 63 people.

However for Kata, Karon and Nai Yang Beach the OrBorJor is still searching for individual lifeguards which will add another 32 people to the lifeguard roster employed by the OrBorJor. Currently only Royal Thai Navy officers, Civil Defense volunteers and Tourist Security Guard volunteers are servicing those three beaches.

Yet people are dying whilst this yearly auction goes on.
Why not just give someone a 5 year deal so we don't keep having these gaps in safety.

Every year they stuff this up and leave the beaches unprotected.
If you can't find the money, charge all hotels a beach tax for keeping it clean and protected.
Hotels should be made to pay for this cost seeing they benefit the most.

That tax is already there, since quite a few years now.

1 scarer per beach would save lifes and money.

BTW would be interesting to know the total amount collected by the 1% "beach guard" tax and how they spend it.

Phuket has about 47.000 registered hotel rooms. So with a low occupancy of 50% with a very low average daily rate of 1000 thb per day they must have a minimum yearly budget of more then 85 million thb. Now they offer 16 million for a new contract ....555. Priceless!

Does anyone actually believe this money goes entirely to life savers?......

They're auctioning lifeguards? For charity? They can't seem to find enough to do the job, as it is.
