I can't seem to quite measure the distance from the centre of Chiang Mai to the temple on Doi Suthep. From the edge of town it says 18kms. It's so long since I went up it that I can't be sure and always remember it as being more than that.

Has anyone cycled up it to the temple? About how long did it take? How did you find it? Tough climb? I'd imagine its 2 hours work at least.

From the Zoo to Doi Suthep is 11kms then another 4kms to the Palace. It's a long climb but it's a constant gradient with an average of 6%. Should be closer to 1 hour than 2 hours work.

Enjoy.

Yes, I did it last year. After suffering up Doi Inthanon the previous day it was very enjoyable. Made even more special by seeing at least 50 other cyclists going up and down the mountain during my ride.

Often, 10.6Km from the zoo to the temple steps in 50 minutes on my road bike.

Or around 60 minutes from the Huay Keow corner of the moat.

It's a nice ride, as hard or easy as you want to make it.

Continue up to Phu Ping Palace for a bit more of the same - or Doi Pui if you've got the tyres for it.

I don't recommend going beyond the Palace at this time of year. It's a one-lane road with too much traffic unless you're on the road by 6:00am.
