Genuine copy of Windows 10 Home - where to buy?

Recommended Posts

I'm purchasing a new computer and want to buy a Genuine copy of Windows 10 Home edition either DVD or USB.

I want to buy the software from a well know retailer.  Why?  I want to make sure I'm getting a genuine copy as opposed to a pirated copy.  With the larger retailers I have more options in case the software shows up as bogus.  I also don't want to buy on-line.  I've read too many reviews where people buy on-line simply to end up with a pirated Win 10 DVD with a bogus key.  If the software licensing keys has problems, I want to be able to talk to a retail manager in person.  So I want to buy it here in Chiang Mai.

So, does anyone know a larger, reputable retailer which sells the Microsoft Windows 10 Home Edition software here in Chiang Mai?

If the computer you are buying has Windows 10 installed, you can verify on the computer if the software is properly activated.

To check activation status in Windows 10, select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Update & security  > Activation.

To reinstall Windows 10, just use the recovery option under Settings.

All the big retailers will sell either a new computer with legit windows on it, (5,000 baht extra) or will sell a legit windows media and a key. The install media isn't what is pirated etc, its the key/activation thats pirated. You could use any install media and from within windows, go online to microsoft and by a key.

A computer shop doing legit windows will probably use the same copy of windows install media, just a different key to activate it.

The 2nd link is free, install windows then go and buy a key.

Microsoft allows anyone to download Windows 10 for free and install it without a product key. It’ll keep working for the foreseeable future, with only a few small cosmetic restrictions. And you can then pay to upgrade to a licensed copy of Windows 10 after you install it.

Why do you want to buy it? It's free now. We bought 3 new computers earlier this year. We downloaded Windows 10 Professional for free from MS. We have used the computers all year now. I bought a license on eBay for about 5 GBP for one machine as an experiment. It is 100% legitimate from a very reputable U.K. seller. The only difference between the one computer and the other two is that you can (I think) change desktop images - never tried. The others update normally and function 100%.

No retailers involved.

21st century technology!

Times have changed, however, if you buy a computer with no operating system installed, how are you going to download Windows 10?

Here's the way to do it:

Go here: https://www.microsoft.com/th-th/software-download/windows10

On your current computer, create media installation for installing Windows 10 on another PC (USB flash drive or DVD). Choose the 2nd option of the 3 offered on the website above. Follow the instructions.

Install it on your new computer using either the USB flash drive or DVD. I would recommend the USB flash drive as it's faster.

Enjoy Windows 10 on your new computer. If in the future you are asked to activate it, then you can do that directly with Microsoft. I don't know if they do or not. I've been running Windows 10 for 1 - 2 years on 4 computers, upgraded from pirated Windows 7's and never been asked.

This should work fine if you have anything from Windows 7 Home version or later on your current PC.

I bought recently from Microsoft Online and the company installed it remotely for me. A fascinating process to see the cursor darting around my screen directed by a MS expert in some other part of the world.

Obviously I didn't clarify this enough.  Tropo has it correct having probably read the first sentence of my post ----  I'm buying a brand new laptop that only had FreeDos installed on it.  So first, it has no licensed copy of Windows so a 'free' upgrade to Windows 10 is not in the cards, I need to buy a valid key for the installation.  Second, I don't want the store I'm buying the computer from to install the software.  I'll just end up reinstalling it.  I dual boot with a different OS so I want to control how the partitions are created on that computer. Plus most pre-installs are loaded with junk-ware and possible malware, along with unlicensed copies of programs such as Microsoft Windows.   I want a completely clean, legal installation of Windows 10 without all of the bloatware and god-knows-what-else installed.   Third, until the new computer has an OS loaded, I have no way to go online to download the Windows 10 media and activation key.  So much for the wonders of technology!  I have a chicken and egg problem here <can't get the egg until you have a chicken; can't get a chicken until you have an egg>.

So back to the original question:

So, does anyone know a larger, reputable retailer who sells the Microsoft Windows 10 Home Edition software (media + license key) here in Chiang Mai?   I'm still looking for a retailer if for no other reason then to compare prices.  I found out later in the day that the place I'm buying the computer has the Windows 10 Home package for 4590 THB.  From my calculations that's about 600 THB more than the official Microsoft price.

Almost every Banana IT Branch install W10 for 500 THB.

I don't want a pre-install or a retailer installed OS.  I'm very capable of doing my own installation and OS configuration and I want the laptop set up in a very specific manner.  But thanks!

You are obviously online now, download it now to a bootable usb, ready to go when you get your new PC.

Lots of computer shops will put/sell windows install media on a disk/usb for you. The same install media that you would download, or buy in a microsoft box.

According to their website, JIB computers in chaing mai sell windows home dvd, 4,000 baht.

I still don't understand why you (or why people are recommending OP spends 4K THB literally just giving money away to a store!). Microsoft gives the Windows 10 Professional Edition OS for FREE. Just use the computer you are using to surf this website and download the OS from Microsoft. Store it on a USB drive. Put the USB drive into the new computer and install the OS. VERY simple. You can configure your partitions to your heart's content during installation.  After it has been installed then it will automatically update. If you absolutely want to change the desktop appearance then you can buy a license from eBay for 5 GBP.

It's really very simple now. Why make things difficult and give money away?

I found a genuine copy with a USB installation and valid key for 4K THB which is essentially the same price as the same product in the US or approximately $119.  The new system is up and functioning with a valid activation.  I'm set.

Exactly why I assume some guy in another country can look at anything on my machine, and I have zero regard for so called "security".

LOL....

I learned something new the other day....

I had an issue with one of our computers and after spending a ridiculous amount of time to sort it, decided to just reinstall Windows 10 from the ground up. I continued to experience problems even after the re-installation of Windows. It was beyond my expertise and I retained the services of a technician to come over and sort things out. It turned out to be an issue with the bios as well as another problem with a program I was running. Anyway, Windows 10 was re-installed for the 3rd time, this time the technician performed the installation. When I asked the technician if I should go and get the license key that I had previously purchased, he looked at me with a confused look on his face and said "Why?" Then......"Didn't you know that any name motherboard (or name-brand desktop set/notebook) purchased within the last 6 years (Windows 8) has a chip on it that automatically generates a license key? The manufacturer has already made this arrangement with Microsoft." He then showed me as he was installing the OS, the screen where it says something like "Windows 10 Pro detected, issuing license." My motherboard on this particular machine is ASUS, but he says that almost any decent brand computer or motherboard purchased in Thailand and Malaysia has this feature built in.

I told the technician that I had read on a forum of people spending 4K Baht on a Windows 10 license. He turned and looked at me with a grin on his face and said "Falang? Can't be Thai people. They would never do that. But every shop knows about this chip that generates a license. Maybe an opportunity to sell to falang who don't know."

There is no chip in motherboards that 'generates a licence'. When a PC is first activated, the hardware signature is recorded on the activation servers and used to confirm the validity of an install if you need to reinstall Windows at a later date.
