THE CRIMINAL COURT on Tuesday handed down a guilty verdict against all seven defendants in the brutal stabbing to death of a physically challenged bread seller, sentencing them to between 12 and 19 years in jail.

The six men and a woman -were also ordered to pay Bt500,000 compensation to the mother of the victim.

However, Anantachai Chaiyadej, who represents the victim’s family, said he would appeal the verdict, claiming the sentences should all have been harsher.

“They should have been convicted of premeditated murder, the charge that investigators failed to press against them,” he said.

Four of the defendants were found guilty of murder, but not of premeditated murder.

Anantachai has another connection to the case as his office is near the bakery where the victim, 36-year-old Somkiat Srichan, worked and in front of which he was fatally stabbed.

The attack occurred on May 1 last year when the seven defendants attacked the bakery after a dispute that started earlier in the day.

The dispute arose after the convicts ridiculed Somkiat for his physical disabilities and Somkiat reportedly responded by insulting them.

CCTV footage showed the brutal attack, which led to severe public condemnation of the perpetrators.

Somkiat’s mother Thongkham Srichan, 67, has refused to cremate his body as she sought justice for him.

“I will consult my relatives as to whether now is an appropriate time for the cremation to take place,” she said.

Initially, there was widespread speculation that the defendants would get off lightly given that some of them were the sons of policemen.

Convicted of murdering Somkiat were Phirapon Yospong-anan, 22, Akradej Tassana, 23, Monmanas Saengpho, 22, and Arin Yospong-anan, 18.

Jatuporn Jansopa, 19, Mek Pornkraisorn, 20, and Monmanas’ girlfriend Natnicha Ritlamlert, 19, were found guilty of abetting the killing.

Akradej, Jatuporn and Arin were also convicted of trespassing.

All except Natnicha were fined Bt1,000 for carrying weapons in a public place.

The prison sentences were 19 years for Akradej and Arin, 18 years for Phirapon and Monmanas, 13 years for Jatuporn, and 12 years for Mek and Natnicha.

I agree with the lawyer, they got time but due to them being sons of police if it was caught and a outcry the sentence was like.

This wasn't just some insults thrown around it was done to someone agree or disagree basically helpless what could have been so important that would make you feel you have a set of balls doing this to someone incapable of defending themselves?

I wonder how they feel about it.

Teasing a disabled person, who then insults you.

What happened next is something they can think about for 12-19 years!

Hope a lot of similar convictions will follow in other cases so people maybe start to understand that your actions will have consequences, and its not only your own life that you destroy.

Good riddance scums, how many other crimes they have committed before this conviction?, you don’t murder a person on your first criminal offense! Their <deleted> are the size of one baht coin soon will be the size of a 10 baht coin

I understand why "premeditated murder" didn't stick. Pre (before) meditate (think). Clearly these scum never learned to think.

Could TV check up in a couple of months/years to see if these guys are actually in the slammer? Conviction is one thing, serving time another here in LOS

First time I've seen this law used.

It is about time it was routinely enforced. Almost every little bellend on scooter has a knife somewhere.

Lives in the toilet or not there is NO excuse for cold blooded murder of a anyone let alone a spastic as in this horrifying case . These heartless killers should be getting life without parole for this . Id prefer them to get the ultimate penalty however I also understand the logic against the death penalty .

That this is even a news item is pathetic.

Anywhere else the opposite would be news.

Here IT IS a quite piece of news. Btw do we want to talk of corruptions in other parts of the world like South America or Africa?

Fair enough about other "developing" countries, but that doesn't make it any less pathetic.

It is clear case of murder with proper evidence. It should be commuted as life term until they are dead for good.

These guys should be interviewed by the TV, News paper for their crime motives. And younger generation should be afraid of doing such crimes.

His father should feel the shame for his whole life, for raising such a son, when he is the guardian of the law as a police official.

Unlikely, dont forget they have powerful connections in the police and will possibly have an easy jail time ? . Just thankful that the scum got convicted . Without the CCTV would they have gone scot free ? possibly .

His father has no good connection in department or the evidence is strong enough.

Previously one of the Thai minister's son(a Navy official), shot and killed someone at the bar. He is still on the run in Malaysia. I don't know what happened to him ? May be he is back to service silently. :sleepy:

i don't think they had 'powerful' connections with the police. if i remember rightly they were Sgts sons which does not equate to much power. As far as the slammer is concerned i think their dads being BiB is irrelevant and more how much they are willing to pay the prison for protection like any other inmate, they are screwed now basically
