Hacking has many levels. For example we could hack a modem/router to provide additional features.

Lol - the ignorance, the ignorance! Most of the big tech company founders started as 'hackers' - to hack simply means to re-purpose technology, nothing more. The uninformed just can't help but get on their high horses, despite the ridicule they must so often suffer as a consequence of shooting their mouths off on topics they so obviously know nothing about.

I think you need to combine the "Hacker"  and the "Maker" idea , 

 

This way he can make stuff , get an idea of mechanical ideas  and design things using the Coding .....

 

I think you need both sides ,  computer stuff and mechanical "How its built" knowledge
