Look at the real criminal the price of rent at Airports. Shops are expensive in a building likely very heavily subsidised by the government. Then follow the money trail to where it's being spent or in the extreme case who's pocket its filling. Even my brother-in-law from London (Banker) thought it was a rip-off. Likewise, In DonMuang there is a similar one, but I forgot the exact location. As for the zone after check-in (the "tax-free" area), I never purchase anything there except maybe a cup of coffee, but never at Starbucks. Here's another one: eat before you go to airport. Maybe that 2 hr early checkin is not due to fear of terrorists but conspiracy of restaurants and airport managers world wide!!! I was amazed when going thru my home town airport (Portland, Oregon) and food franchises prices were same as off the reservation. Swampy lacks free cold water dispensers, last trip out I bought a bottle from King Power ( yes should be 10 baht they charge 30 baht), I expected the rip off, but then they must have the boarding pass to record the sale. You can plan to eat before travelling to the airport and take something from a 7/11 to the airport for before check in if hungry. You are probably only waiting 2-3 hours max for the plane anyway - and most of us will be on long haul with a meal served basically after take off. If flying out of BKK, I normally eat before I leave for the airport. If I have an early departure and this isn't possible, I'll go to the airport, check in and then go downstairs to the food court, where, as other posters have mentioned, the prices are reasonable. The ambience isn't great, though, and the food is so-so. But for an early morning breakfast it's OK. Sometimes I fly in from Chiang Mai to transfer to an international flight, and if that's the case I have a meal or a snack at the shopping centre near the airport in Chiang Mai -- prior to check in. When I arrive in BKK, there are water fountains airside, so I bring an empty bottle and fill that up for however long I'm in the terminal. Eat before going to the airport and you will be eating again on the plane within 4 hours max. Easy to buy a snack at 7-11 or some fruit to take to airport before leaving hotel if you really cant go a few hours without food. Too many people want to get on a plane full up !
