PM orders check of high food and drink prices at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports

Featured Replies

So the news flash is that airports charge more than the streets? Wow that's been going on forever. Look at the real criminal the price of rent at Airports. Shops are expensive in a building likely very heavily subsidised by the government. Then follow the money trail to where it's being spent or in the extreme case who's pocket its filling. Nuff said but that's a realistic look into things to thump ones chest and bark loudly will distract the masses and make one look amazing

  • PM orders check on high food and drink prices !! I can give him the answer, it is the extremely high rents they have to pay to do business there.

  • Consumers can decide which shop to patronize but water should be give free or sold at reasonable price because it cannot be brought in.

  • I used to always eat a Thai meal before I flew back to England, etc. My last bit of Thai food for a few weeks. Last time I paid 260 baht for a kra pow. It wasn't even good. Add to that a few pints in

While they are there, check out the ripoff prices at King Power.

Many things are a rip-off. I stayed at a chain hotel in Phuket in October and they were charging 2,500 Baht for a steak. Even my brother-in-law from London (Banker) thought it was a rip-off. Sure, it's the same price as the UK, BUT in the UK the staff are paid way more that 8 pounds a day :post-4641-1156693976:

Always been a gripe of mine, the quality and price of the food is terrible.

It must be bad as I always seem drawn to Burger King when air side (and I very rarely eat a burger)  Problem is that most airline food is no better (business/first class flights exception)

We must have eaten in every restaurant in Swampy but not one stands out as been good.

At Swampy, if you wanna have a good cheap meal, check out the restaurant on the bottom floor of the terminal, in the furthest South-East corner of the building. Likewise, In DonMuang there is a similar one, but I forgot the exact location. As for the zone after check-in (the "tax-free" area), I never purchase anything there except maybe a cup of coffee, but never at Starbucks. Just go straight to the gate and sit there until boarding, boycott the stupid King Power and the other rubbish.

I count at least a dozen PM words that appear to make sense . . . he must have had the dummy on duty again.

No different from most airports anywhere globally.....just that duty free in BKK is dearer than 7/11!

let these complainers go to the United States ANY Airport and even try to buy a bottle of water for less than three dollars! and booze sanwiches? they would have a heart attack!  best stay in the cheap seats..

the PM has a lot of words, maybe more words than anyone else in the world.

Cup of coffee at the airport is more expensive than at Shangri-La Hotel!!!

WOW, I never knew that. Sounds good though. Which lounge are you referring to, and where is it located?

Thanks.

Google Loungebuddy for one-off lounge passes. Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi around 1000 baht though for 1500 baht you can pay to enter the Oman Air lounge, which is more peaceful and comfortable than some of the others. If you travel regularly look at Priority Pass.

Many airports shops/restaurants/bars around the world still overcharge but in Thailand the mark-up is excessive, partly due to the King Power monopoly, I'm sure.

It's a standard practice that airports are 50-100% more expensive then outside but the shop rental is higher also hence the prices charged.

But at least someone is aware and checking it out ....  good job  !

Oh-oh, he's up . . . watch your drinks, chaps, at least until boreding time.

I don't really worry about the price if I'm hungry more the quality. KUL probably the best I've had, (Not the budget terminal)

Almost every airport in the world has overpriced so so food. The Magic Mart and Family Marts good suggestions. Here's another one: eat before you go to airport. Maybe that 2 hr early checkin is not due to fear of terrorists but conspiracy of restaurants and airport managers world wide!!! I was amazed when going thru my home town airport (Portland, Oregon) and food franchises prices were same as off the reservation. Haven't been there for some time, probably fixed that by now.

We all know the high prices and we all know about the monopoly. So no idea why he needs to investigate the known issues. Save time go and fix the problem!!. Swampy lacks free cold water dispensers, last trip out I bought a bottle from King Power ( yes should be 10 baht they charge 30 baht), I expected the rip off, but then they must have the boarding pass to record the sale. Brought back to mind John McEnroe's famous saying " are you <deleted> serious" boarding pass for a bottle of water!

Don Muang? Check Air Asia. One bottle of small water costs you 40 Baht.

Their luggage policy is an open robbery.

That's two of us. Rip-off pricing aside, there is nowt I am interested in buying anyway.

They do have water dispensers. Go to the khazis away from the retail areas.

I do like an Air Asia Nasi Lamak similar to the real thing

Yeah I've seen a Chinese hoard around them in DM

Delays aside - if you're daft enough to eat at an airport, you deserve what you get. You can plan to eat before travelling to the airport and take something from a 7/11 to the airport for before check in if hungry. You are probably only waiting 2-3 hours max for the plane anyway - and most of us will be on long haul with a meal served basically after take off. How many of us don't eat the free meal on the plane as we're too full of 'moan about rip-off ground food'.

I no longer spend any money on food and drink in Swampy airside, the value isn't there.

If flying out of BKK, I normally eat before I leave for the airport. If I have an early departure and this isn't possible, I'll go  to the airport, check in and then go downstairs to the food court, where, as other posters have mentioned, the prices are reasonable. The ambience isn't great, though, and the food is so-so. But for an early morning breakfast it's OK.

Sometimes I  fly in from Chiang Mai to transfer to an international flight, and if that's the case I have a meal or a snack at the shopping centre near the airport in Chiang Mai -- prior to check in.  When I arrive in BKK, there are water fountains airside, so I bring an empty bottle and fill that up for however long I'm in the terminal.

It isn't that difficult, just have to plan ahead a little.

Water is expensive because passengers are not allow to bring their own; so no choice! Liquor at King Power is more expensive than in 7/11

Why moan about 1 dollar or so for a bottle of water when you are about to fly to a country where it costs three in a market and five in an airport? Most posters here are skint.

Why do people even need to eat at the airport ? Unless you have a long stop over it not neccessary.  Eat before going to the airport and you will be eating again on the plane within 4 hours max.  Easy to buy a snack at 7-11 or some fruit to take to airport before leaving hotel if you really cant go a few hours without food. Too many people want to get on a plane full up !  Are they scared they will go hungry ? No wonder there are so many fatties in the world !

?????????????

It is free at water dispensers.

I always take an empty bottle through to fill up on air side.

As do I. Fortunately the sods have not yet figured out a way to ban empty plastic bottles on 'security' grounds, but I am sure they are working on it.

Air travel really is the pits nowadays, isn't it?

Well why not pay them double when you make a purchase? I am sure they won't mind...

Because I get food and drink for free at the lounge.

I do like the Pizza slices at Dean and Deluca,

Hope he looks at the International franchise food restaurants that load their already high Sukhumvit prices even further.

Of course as others have pointed out that terrible King Power outfit are also contributing to this situation.
