Male 56. Otherwise good health.

Following a tortuous couple of days of episodic vomiting bile I got diagnosed with acute appendicitis.  On the operating table, the balloon-like organ just burst.  It was already gangrenous.  The operation went without hitch, and a few days later the wound was sutured.  I was discharged a few hours later, but wasn't given much in the way of information about post-operative care, other than keep taking the antibiotics and report every couple of days or so for change of bandage.

The day after I felt terribly sore, and nauseous, but tried to struggle in to do a bit of work.  I can only think all the pethidine I'd been taking affected my judgement as it was quite clearly a crazy thing to do, and I ended up with another vomiting attack- a normal one this time.

Four days in to my recovery and I'm feeling much better.  When could I return to work?  Any other advice?

One good thing: I had a battery of tests, xrays, and ultrasound, and came out A1.

Unless your work entails heavy lifting or otber exertion that would put stress on the incision line, you can go back when you feel up to it.

If your work does involve such exertion then I would give it at least 2 weeks.

Only special instruction would be to avoid getting the wound wet between dressing changes and avoid heavy lifting/strenuous activities (anything that would put significant traction on the wound) for about 6 weeks.
