webfact
Tourism "killing Thai paradise" as thousands visiting Similan Islands daily Picture: Manager Online Posts on Facebook have painted a worrying picture for the future of one of Thailand's last remaining paradises - the Similan islands in the south. Manager reported that "Loveaholic" posted seven pictures that showed hordes of tourists - 90% Chinese - descending on the once idyllic beaches. Officials can't cope with up to 5,000 visitors daily, said Manager. They barely have enough staff to even collect the 200 million baht that they bring in during the November to April open season. Manager said the area was considered one of the ten best marine tourism locations in the world. But overcrowding and the consequent effect on the environment was killing the area. RotMahKid
Don't blame the tourists, It's the Thai that bring them there and it's you that wants to have tourists in your country so this can happen, so blame yourself, not the tourists. If you want the keep the Paradise for the future, then close is totally.

Kind of useless to have a paradise but not being able to see or experience it. Like buying the most beautiful painting for a museum and then putting it in a vault where nobody can see it. You can just as well not have it in that case. How about a quota system with an transparant way to apply for tickets at fixed prices? See how the germans give you (free) access to the Reichtag. Limited tickets per day and you can apply online based on your name (show passport to get entrance).
Thechook
Set limits of how many can visit and it can be maintained and you also wont need more staff to collect all that money rolling in. Oh wait, silly me you will not get your full 200 million and money is the most important. Hire more staff and buy more buckets for the cash. gamini
It not just Thailand. It's the same everywhere. I took my wife to Rome to see the sights. The crush of tourists and long queues was terrible, especially in the Vatican. Many places we have been are no worse in this respect than Thailand. natway09
Somebody just waking up.I have been saying this for 15 years. I will say it again "Killing the goose that lays the golden egg" TAT & the Government will totally kill tourism here as all they are doing is bringing in numbers that this country does not have enough infrastructure for. Eg: The big sewerage treatment plants with fat separation in Bangkok. 555 (Funny if it was not so serious)

Briggsy
The Similan Islands Archipelago National Park falls into the top drawer of National Parks with an entrance fee for foreigners of 500 Baht. I wonder if that is what is paid by the Chinese Tour Group members.

Krataiboy
The Simians are just the latest in an ever-lengthening line of Thai shangri-las destroyed by mass tourism and the get-rich-quick businesses which feed off the industry. Pattaya and Phuket, now grotesque mockeries of their former charming selves, were early victims of the concrete jungle treatment. There was to be been no escape, either, for islands like Koh Samui and Phi Phi, systematically robbed of that "away from it all" feeling which made the effort to seek them out worthwhile. Visitors to the bustling, polluted Gulf resort of Hua Hin today must wonder how this once-picturesque and peaceful Royal watering hole can still describe itself as the "Queen of Tranquility". A few miles North, the former fishing village of Cha Am is now suffering the same kind of concrete and steel makeover as its luckless big sister. Where will it end? Is there a hidden paradise somewhere in Thailand that has managed somehow to escape the march of "progress"? If so, keep it to yourself or it surely won't stay that way for long. manhood
The general problem is that Thais have no glue of an idea how to keept their country a "paradise" as just all is: money money money ....and mostly in the private pockets. That way you ruin eveything and sooner or later your "paradise" is gone and big tears will run down as no money to make with it.. OH yes You need the find the ones who are guilty: Foreigners for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
