A friend has had an accident and is in hospital in Bangkok and is unable to return to UK until he has his leg operated on. All was going to plan until they discovered his blood type is A- of which there is a real shortage of in Thailand.Doctor has told him he has no idea when he will be able to operate-told him it could be months. I’m going to call Thai Red Cross and the UK Embassy but wondered if any Forum readers had any other ideas ? Many thanks

There are a lot resources to get people attention.

A friend needed A negative blood for surgery a few months ago. His need was posted here https://www.facebook.com/THBloodDonors/ It is mostly in Thai but Google translate will help on it.

If you wish to do a topic on the forum you should  contact forum support with info about the need requesting permission to the topic. https://www.thaivisa.com/forum/contact/

All hospitals are supplied with blood by the Thai Red Cross National Blood Center. The amount of blood of any particular type that a given hospital has on hand at any point of time is not the same as the national supply and hospitals will contact the National Blood Center to request additional units/units of a special type when and as they need to.

If the National Center is unable to supply what is needed, then the best thing to do is to post an appeal for donors, we can do that here if you send me all the pertinent details.

However first verify if the hospital has made a request to the National Blood Center and been told, by them, that no blood is available. It has happened many times in the past that patients and their friends/families were given to understand blood was unavailable when it was simply not currently available in the  hospital and thus needed to be requested from the Blood Center. Doctors seem to not be at all well informed of the status of this sort of thing which is arranged between the hospital Blood Bank  and the Blood Center. They will know what is one hand, inside the hospital, right then and there but not the status of dealings between the hospital Blood Bank and the National Blood Center. The best thing to do is to go yourself to the hospital blood bank and ask them. You might also try calling the National Blood Center to see if they have received a request from the hospital and the status of it. Tel.  02 256 4300, 02 256 1637 ext 1760, 1761

All that said, RH negative blood is always in very short supply in Thailand and those with it are strongly encouraged to donate. Details here for those living in Bangkok
