Thai Govt confident world community will understand election delay

BANGKOK, 5th February 2018 (NNT) – The Thai government is confident the international community will understand the reason behind the postponement of a national election.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lt Gen Werachon Sukondhapatipak said on Saturday that the government is informing the world community of a possible delay in holding the next election, expressing his confidence that other nations would understand.

He stressed that the prime minister and the National Council for Peace and Order had nothing to do with the postponement, as the National Legislative Assembly acted on its own to defer the enforcement of the Organic Members of Parliament Act by 90 days, hence resulting in a likely delay in the national poll.

Lt Gen Werachon said critics, political groups, activists, and members of the public are entitled to express themselves, but their demonstrations must be done within the confines of the law.

In the meantime, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai says no countries have inquired about the possible change in the timing of the election.

Closing sentence sums it all up really. Nobody cares!

"....the international community will understand the reason behind the postponement of a national election."

One thing can be certain that President Trump understands that PM Prayut lied to him at their meeting that elections would be held in November. He wouldn't care about the reasons for the delay.

POTUS gives the impression he does not like liars and as a result is probably making plans that will affect the grossly uneven balance of trade between Thailand and the US. Particularly as the US has pulled out of the Trans-Pacific Trade Pact.

Now he has an excuse to target Thailand for special attention.

While I understand what you're saying, I'm not really sure the POTUS is particularly interested in Thailand, although didn't he  manage to sell us some coal recently?

I would have thought he had more important things to deal with.

I agree that POTUS has probably got little time for any overblown dictator. But the thought and excuse will be sitting in the back of his mind when it comes time to even up the trader balance with Thailand; which will come as night follows day.

These guys do love to pat themselves on the back suggesting that that they've done the right thing...the right thing...the right thing...and again. That they have explained why and believe everyone understands is delusional at very least.

Thailand (Pimchanok Vonkhorporn, head of the Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office) says: U.S. trade deficit 'not significant'...

Reality is: The U.S. Trade Representative’s office reported that the U.S. trade deficit with Thailand was $18.9 billion last year, the 11th largest faced by the United States.

America (Trump) says: “Our relationship on trade is becoming more important and it’s a great country to trade with,” Trump told the Thai official before reporters. “I think we’re going to try to sell a little bit more to you, if that’s possible.”

If anyone knows the significance of an almost 19 billion dollar deficit, it is the current POTUS. Maybe Prayuth isn't totally au fait with the subtle nuance and inferences of the English language so maybe someone should appraise him of the hidden threat in those otherwise benign, closing words, "...if that's possible."

Because, if it's not possible, then you'd better buy a hard hat.

I think it fair to say that Trump is fine with liars , including himself , providing the lies cast him in a good light. Whether he is prepared to accept being lied to in this instance , where there is no upside for him , well it seems unlikely.
