Setting gem in a gold ring

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend a shop that sets precious gem in a gold ring around Chiang Mai or surrounding area?

I've approached many gold shops in Chiang Mai and most of them don't have any skilled technician to do it.

I prefer a shop that have their own internal staff rather than a middleman shop who sub-contracts to another shop and earn commission as a middle-man.

I suggest trying B. Tree Gems in the Baan Tawai area of Hang Dong. They have beautiful gem stones, including those mounted in some nice settings. I am sure they could help you. Look for their web site for examples and information.

thanks by the way

Shiraz Jewelry on Thapae Road, near Soi 1 should be able to help.  Very reputable.  One of the first times I visited Chiang Mai, the owner made some blue sapphire and diamond earrings for me, shortly after he opened and I'd kind of forgotten about the shop, until I lost one of the little diamonds out of an earring with many pavee diamonds and someone recommended I go to Shiraz Jewelry, where the owner did the repair on the spot for a very reasonable price.  Then I realized it was the same shop I'd visited as a young tourist many, many years ago with my young husband to buy what was for us a major purchase that the jewelers in the U.S. said was very good value.

thanks

According to their website, Mr. Nassar has been in business at Shiraz Jewelry since 1982, over 35 years, so Hubby and I must have been some of his first customers.  He's a delightful man.

This may come as a shock to you but that is not from my experience. He's not very honest.

He quoted me a price for setting my gem on the ring at a much higher rate than a shop I found in Warorot. Both the labour charge and the price per gold charge he quoted were higher.

Furthermore, he quoted a much heavier weight for the ring saying that it would make it stronger.

The Thai Chinese shop I found in Warorot quoted a lower price and lower weight for all 3 factors.

There are limited variety of gems at his shop, it's best to go to Bangkok.

Mr Nassar is actually an Iranian but he speaks good English.

The only problem is that sorry to say, he's not as knowledgeable about gems as you expect.

1. The shop is very far away from downtown Chiang Mai

2. When I went there, the staff couldn't give me an exact quotation on the ring.

3. They promised to contact the boss who was away but never called. Even though I phoned several times.

4. They seem to have more gem varieties than Shiraz shop but not as much as Bangkok

5. the staff there is not knowledgeable and the boss isn't around most of the time

6. staff can't speak English

7. customer service is bad

We had a ring repaired there.

I went to this shop as well. Great knowledgeable staff who speaks good English.

They gave me a quotation after just few days unlike B-tree gems.

Cons is that their prices are the most expensive of all three places quoted here.
