So you're saying all I have to do is to take my US DL into wherever, show it to them and they will give me a license? It is for both a car and bike so I would just get a license for both here just like that? No tests or anything?

This isn't the information I have gotten from other people. Other people have told me there are tests, both written and practical. But who knows.

Iknow.Iwent in two weeks ago withmy aussie licence, both bike and car and they changed it over, no test, no eye check, no nothing.I also had an American friend with me who did the same exept he didn't have an endorsment for a bike so he had to do a test for that.

You'll also need two sets of the paperwork becuase they issue each licence separately. Good Luck

That was on Samui at the Land Transport Office at (I think) Lipa Noi. I don't know how it might work at other offices

Thanks gusG, where do I get this paperwork you are talking about? Is it in Thai? Fill it out there?

M

Most important piece of paperwork you will need is a letter of residency obtainable from the immigration office & issued subject to your visa category. Not issued to tourist visa.

If you need to find out more go to the motoring forum, discussed there in length.

After reading this tread I'm thinking if is still worth pay 150 Eur each (me and my wife)

to have the international driver license (which is valid for 3 years) and allow us to drive

there without further problems, what do you think ?

I was not sure about the process to get the D.L locally because lots contradictions,

So I wondered to remove at least one problem from my long list.....

- Visa do be done

- Extension to be ask

- WP in 3 months otherwise start from the beg. again...

- Co.ltd with house ownership.....

tks for your advises

Geppis, you have to be aware that there is a time limit you can use your international licence if you are a long term resident. Also if you buy a car, insurance does not recognise international licences.

If you are going to reside in Thailand for a long period & you can obtain a letter of residency, the process of abtaining the licence is simple.

From memory you need:

1/ Letter of residency

2/copies of your passport ( front page)

3/copy of your visa in passport

4/ 2 photos (these are smaller then passport ones),there is aa shop next to immigration office that can provide them.

5/A medical certificate from any doctor stating that you are in good health ( not older then one month)

6/ Copy of international licence ( They need to sight original )OR I think now your UK licence.

When I applied for mine 2 years back, had to get there before 9 AM, did the eyesight test, color test, coordination test, told to come back after 1Pm & got handed the licence.

After one year & not before, you take another letter of residency & photos, you are then the proud holder of a 5 year licence.

If anyone is wondering about the tests, written one is multiple choice & they help you.The driving one is:

CAR..... You drive between some witches hats, stop one metre from end & reverse.Park parallel to a curb, drive off then reverse back to same position.

Bike..... Just go around the car park without falling off.

Many people drive around without a driver's licence WAIT TILL YOU HAVE AN ACCIDENT.

Tks Rooo !!

this is really good and helpful answer, in particular the fact

that we can not insure your car (or motorbike I presume)

with an Int. D.Licence, I did not know.

I'm Italian so not sure if will be the same for me because

"I'm driving in the wrong side of the road here" :o

The only thing I did not understand is what do you mean with :

"you have to be aware that there is a time limit you can use

your international licence if you are a long term resident"

As Far As motorization here told me, 3 years are the fully validity

of the certificate.

Tks a lot for your advises.

What I mean is ,an international licence in most countries is only allowed whilst you are on a visitor/tourist status. If you intend to be a long term resident, they require you to obtain a local driving licence.

The whole 3 year validity means you can travel around different countries & use it,but as I said it is not a substitute to a local licence.
