A 41-year-old local hunter was arrested after officials found him with a long-tailed macaque’s chopped-up carcass in Tak’s Muang district on Thursday evening.

Following a tip-off that Nikhom Manpakdees had returned from hunting wildlife, police and forestry officials searched his house in Tambon Nong Bua Nua. They seized as evidence a long-tailed macaque’s head and limbs found in a basket and two-kilograms of chopped meat.

Nikhom reportedly confessed to police that he hunted the monkey with the intent to cook and eat it. He said it was his first offence.

He was charged with hunting protected wildlife and possessing a wildlife carcass without permission.

And here they are again, the double standards that allegedly do not exist in Thailand's justice non-system.

Why has the man not been released on bail?

Why does the man have to subject himself to detention for interrogation, although it without doubt "may put him at an inconvenience"?

Why is finding a carcass and some monkey flesh in a pot apparently enough evidence for the police to charge him?

But then again, the idiot confessed to the crime. You never do that in Thailand, never! Then you have basically nothing to fear at all as another similar case has proved so far.

Oh, and yes, it also helps if you are a bigwig with a fat bank account.

any objections to saying the thais are only recently jungle-emergers;
