WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hope Hicks, one of U.S. President Donald Trump's longest-serving, most trusted aides, is resigning from her job as White House communications director.

The White House announced she was leaving a day after Hicks, 29, spent nine hours in a closed hearing of the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee on its investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said Hicks' decision to leave was not related to her appearance before the panel. Lawmakers said Hicks, Trump's spokeswoman during the election campaign, declined to answer questions about the administration.

Hicks' exact departure was unclear but is expected to be sometime over the next few weeks.

Hicks was caught up in a controversy surrounding former White House staff secretary Rob Porter, whom she had been dating. She worked to defend him when charges of domestic abuse against his two former wives emerged. Porter was ultimately forced to resign.

A one-time aide to Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, and with no previous experience in politics, Hicks was one of the first people hired by the then-New York businessman when he began his campaign for the presidency.

She has developed into one of his most trusted advisers. Aides said she had approached the president and told him she wanted to leave so she could start exploring opportunities outside of the White House.

Her departure will deprive Trump of an important confidant and adviser, someone who knows his likes and dislikes through more than three years of experience.

"Hope is outstanding and has done great work for the last three years. She is as smart and thoughtful as they come, a truly great person," Trump said in a statement released by the White House. "I will miss having her by my side but when she approached me about pursuing other opportunities, I totally understood. I am sure we will work together again in the future."

Robert Trout, a lawyer for Hicks, declined comment. Hicks said in her own statement that "there are no words to adequately express my gratitude to President Trump. I wish the president and his administration the very best as he continues to lead our country."

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly said in a statement of Hicks: "To say that she will be missed, is an understatement."

Hicks took over as communications director in September after the difficult, 11-day tenure of Anthony Scaramucci, who was fired. She is credited behind the scenes for stabilizing the communications operation.

rats + sinking ship comes to mind

I think everyone gets coated with the Trump slime, sells their soul, loses their integrity and are cast aside, or maybe her parents/family/friends intervened to save her? I'm leaning towards the latter, especially given her fling with Rob "Boom Boom" Porter.

The "reasons" she has given for her resignation are clearly another "white lie".

It sounds like Trump ripped into her after her House testimony, where she confessed to telling "white lies" for Trump - called her stupid, then I assume she showed some shred of self-worth and walked out?

Trump reportedly berated Hicks for admitting to ‘white lies’

A livid Trump demanded to know “how she could be that stupid” to admit she lies for the president, the report said.

Hicks about to flip? Another Trumpster in the (Mueller) dumpster.

That's 4 communication directors in 13 months for Trump. Will he get Sean Spicer back for his 3rd stint in the job? Who would want it?

Oh, didn't you know, all the bad things about Trump are fake news. Trump depends on people who ARE that stupid.

it’s not clear what she meant by “white lies”.

"White lies" is a colloquialism we use to describe small, unimportant untruths we use, especially when wanting to avoid insulting someone.

As in, "No those shorts don't make you look fat."

...and what does it mean when a porn script instructs the actress to come?

Just another employee who has decided she has had enough nonsense, dispensed from an absolute fool. No matter what anybody says, there is no making American great again. Ain't gonna happen. Not in our lifetimes. The direction that country is going in, is irreversible. It is sinking into a wormhole of it's own making. Gorging on reality TV for three decades is a large reason for it. An impotent class of millennials, a completely broken political system, populated by whores on both sides of the aisles, who worship at the feet of a golden calf (lobbyists and the terrorist organization known as the NRA), a completely re-populated political swamp, division, hatred, xenophobia, a completely broken immigration policy (how can you possibly discuss illegal immigration, when you are unwilling to discuss fixing legal immigration?), the astonishing exodus of industry, and more. I could go on for days.

I am an American. I own a business in the US. I spend time there annually. I am not just making this crap up. I have seen it firsthand. It is NOT the nation I knew as a young man. It is a land of bitter, disenfranchised, disillusioned, joyless, unfulfilled people, for the most part. There are exceptions, of course. But, I would say unless you are in the top 5%, the quality of your life has diminished so significantly in the past couple of decades, it is beyond recognition.

I feel extremely fortunate to have escaped. And my heart goes out to many of those that remain.

Though I stand 6'2", my equipment is small, and quite inferior for a man of my stature. Therefore, I have carried that insecurity, lack of self esteem, and lack of self love with me since I was a young man. Women have commented on my lack of prowess often. It is one of the reasons why I am such an incredible blowhard, and why I need to brag, and engage in bluster every time I open my foul mouth. As everyone knows, everything I say is false, so when I brag about things like my equipment, of course that is false too. Like my hands, everything else is small. I am constantly striving to make up for that in everything I do and say.

Tiny DT. The art of moving America backwards, and lowering the quality of life for the average American. The art of I cannot make a deal to save my life. The art of losing talent in droves, and replacing them with sycophantic fools, devoid of talent or experience. The art of not having a diplomatic bone in his body, and destroying long held alliances, with hate, hubris and a horrible lack of intelligence, vision and talent.

I think you summed it all up very elequently. A sad episode in America's history......hopefully this too shall pass.

I didn't realize Corey Lewandowski was married when he and Hope Hicks were having an affair. About as classy as that doofus Jason Miller and A.J. DelGado having an affair while Miller was married, and fathering a child with her. Family Values. Gack.

Seems like Ms. Hicks is in seriously deep doo-doo.

Former Trump Spokesman Believed Hope Hicks Was Considering Obstructing Justice Over Trump Tower Meeting Statement

Mr. Corallo is planning to tell Mr. Mueller about a previously undisclosed conference call with Mr. Trump and Hope Hicks, the White House communications director, according to the three people. Mr. Corallo planned to tell investigators that Ms. Hicks said during the call that emails written by Donald Trump Jr. before the Trump Tower meeting — in which the younger Mr. Trump said he was eager to receive political dirt about Mrs. Clinton from the Russians — “will never get out.” That left Mr. Corallo with concerns that Ms. Hicks could be contemplating obstructing justice, the people said.

Another Illiberal from Trump's administration facing prosecution, in Hopeless' case 'obstruction of justice' (Offering to ensure that emails get disappeared).

A few sweet words to her co-conspirator as she leaves in the hope that he might throw her a pardon.

She either cuts a deal with Mueller or she's toast.

Either that or she's moving to a network to be a pretty talking head for multiples of her current salary. Serving in government is all about the revolving door between "service" and cashing in. If you're atractive you make more. I mean that's pretty obvious isn't it?

Looking at pictures of her effortless shmoozing with the likes of Corey Lewandowski, Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway, Stephen Miller and other fascists in the West wing , I can't help but be reminded of images of Eva Braun coquettishly mugging for the cameras on the Berchtesgaden patio.

That is typically the case with people who have White House experience....except with this White House.

[A former White House official said he's spoken with more aides inside the White House who are trying to leave the administration, but not necessarily getting the kinds of high-paying offers in the corporate world as former aides usually do.

"Things are still pretty bleak inside the White House," the source said. "I've talked to several people in the last week trying to find a way out, but they can't get out because no one is really hiring people with Trump White House experience. Not a fun time to say the least."]

Yeah, Trump staff are sort of like those rowers on those Roman ships in Ben-Hur chained to their seats....555555

I'm not one that wishes for government and media to be interchangeable. It's been said that the Clinton's had 4,000 people in government and later media beholden to them for their appointments. That ain't good. It skews the dialougue to where you can't trust the motivations of anyone who says or does anything. I like it better when the media are jounalists rather than former politicos.

Agree that Fox News should not be allowed to call themselves a "news" network.
