Got any evidence at all that defense arrangements are going to be an issue? Has the Trump administration made the slightest noise in that direction?

First, what US defense shield that extends through Canada?

Like the shield that defends Guam and Hawaii?

Second, Canadian Lt.-Gen. Pierre St-Amand, deputy commander of Colorado-based Norad said, during an appearance before the Canadian House of Commons defence committee, which is studying the extent to which Canada is ready for an attack by North Korea, that the extant U.S. policy is not to defend Canada.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/policy-says-us-wont-defend-canada-from-missile-attack-norad-general/article36258719/

What it comes to is that the greater part of national defense is national defense policy. And that is where Trump has thrown to personal and thoughtless edicts. What country views Canada as a potential military adversary? Not North Korea. One might say the same about Mexico.

Trump's coming back - from a one-nighter at Mar-a-Lago - for the annual Gridiron Club Dinner Saturday. He avoided it last year, it should be interesting as it is a bit of a roast.

Wonderful, now our 'allies' want America to lose a war.  It is time for America to start fair trade instead of keep sending money overseas as a 'trade imbalance'.

America's friends want the US to be led by a good leader.  They're disappointed.  The reasons are obvious.

You mean "overseas" like Canada.?The USA actually has a 2 billion dollar trade surplus with Canada for steel. In fact 50 percent of all US steel exports go to Canada. As for aluminium, Canada has access to vast amounts of cheap hydropower electricity. The US simply can't compete with that.

As for Europe, they're already talking about targeting US industries.

The man-child is starting a trade war with the world and everyone on the planet loses - most definitively including his base supporters. The Dow fell 400 points when the abomination opened his stinking mouth about imposing tariffs.

The Dow futures where down almost 900 points on November 8th 2016. The Dow's 31% gain during Trump's first year is the best since FDR. Considering all the opposition and resistance he has been getting since he announced  to run for President,it's amazing. This if anything  truly shows a smart business man and a remarkable  desire  to achieve what he set out to do for America,to  make American's first and great again . Amazing

Former Trump adviser Icahn dumped steel stock ahead of new tariffs: report

President Trump’s former adviser Carl Icahn sold off millions of dollars worth of stocks tied to the steel industry one week before the president announced new tariffs on steel and aluminum, according to reporting from The Washington Post.

Icahn sold $31.3 million worth of stock in the Manitowoc Company, a manufacturer of construction cranes, according to a Feb. 22 SEC filing.

Manitowoc’s stock fell to $26 after Trump’s announcement. Icahn sold his shares for about $32 to $34 each, even though he had not actively been trading the company’s stock since January 2015.

You do realise that the steel stock valued at just over 100 million is but a small part of a 8 billion hedge fund.......by scale, insignificant.......a little knowledge is dangerous, but you anti Trumpers don't care about 'all' the facts...only the ones that fit your skewed agenda.....no worries friend, only 7 yrs to go.....

Amazing indeed. The man-child seems hellbent on starting a trade war and that will negatively effect the world economy, of which the US is very much a part.

But I guess when the MAWA pipe dream is all one cares about a minor thing like a possible global recession is of no importance.

“Whatever his final decision is, is what will happen,” Mr. Ross said

Trotting out an elderly, doddering, out-of-touch billionaire with a soup can was a classic that Monty Python would have been proud of.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross argued. "I just bought this can today at a 7-Eleven ... and it priced at a $1.99. Who in the world is going to be too bothered?"

It would be the manufacturer of Campbell's Soup!

A Campbell spokesperson noted its impact on the company's costs.

"Any new broad-based tariffs on imported tin plate steel — an insufficient amount of which is produced in the U.S. — will result in higher prices on one of the safest and more affordable parts of the food supply."

Campbell Soup and companies like Kraft-Heinz, General Mills and Hershey will be among the food companies hurt the most, according to analysts at Credit Suisse.

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/02/wilbur-ross-tariffs-are-nbd-but-campbells-says-cans-will-cost-more.html

These are American blue chip companies. If Trump goes through with a full international trade war, he'll essentially wipe out reduced lower income tax benefits for corporations.

Ixnay on any canned goods in Agriculture Secretary Perdue and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mulvaney's "Harvest Boxes", I guess?

USDA's America's Harvest Box Is A Terrible Idea For All

Since February 13 and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney first floated their concept of the “America’s Harvest Box” as a way to reduce costs and the number of people on foods stamps (or SNAP – the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) just about everyone has criticized the idea. And it’s their own fault. The mishandling of how to explain this idea might well kill what could have been an idea worth exploring. Not surprising coming from this White House though.

A thought has occurred to me (yes even to me it happens. generally around the time of the full moon) Maybe Trump's steel tariff announcement is a ploy to help Saccone (R) win the election over Lamb in that Pennsylvania district. There's still some steelmaking going on there and it would help Saccone. The latest poll shows the Republican 3 points behind. But most likely that poll was conducted at least partially before the announcement. Once the election is held, the tariff threat may disappear. There does already seem to be some waffling going on.

Sanctions from the Canadians? What is the U.S. ever to do? If Canada starts a sanction war, they would be on their own for their own for the cost of their own defense. That would cost them much, much, more. I lived not far from the U.S. Canadian border. Never gave it any thought that Canada was there. They had absolutely no effect on my life. Wouldn't miss them if they went their own way.

You may find Canadians have the same opinion
