Landowners Join Muralists To Keep Panther Art Alive

By Chayanit Itthipongmaetee, Staff Reporter

First it was a black panther with a gunshot wound stenciled at a construction site. Then a black cat’s head appeared on a street wall with a “mute” icon.

What started as a few quickly suppressed subversive acts has become an uncontainable mass movement with artists nationwide pitting the power of spray paint against money and status to demand justice for a crime against nature.

Well, in these circumstances the wrongdoers usually threaten to sue people. This time that might be a bit more difficult. It's easier just to bully one or two of the peasants.

Power to the people. Under the current regime, I see this movement as a metaphor for citizens disdain for the PTB.

That being said, the unsavoury types that control this country will find some way to politicize the issue similar to the heinous crime of eating sandwiches.

The quick disappearance of murals on public spaces demonstrates that the PTB are acutely aware of the message Thai people are sending.

Won't be surprised if private property owners who agree to allow murals on their property are met with threats and intimidation.

I seriously hope that this show of emotions and feelings spills over to other areas of Thai society, the common man & woman are beginning to find their collective voices on a number of issues over the last few months, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Stay strong people of Thailand, all is not lost.
