He do his job as a police officer

And quickly meny just joking about this

It seems for me people just want Thailand to be corrupt so your guy's can pay your why out every time you get caught for drinking and driving or meaby working

When police not do anything your guy's complaining

When police do their jobs your guy's complaining

Double moral

He says many are masquerading as international school teachers and footballers to commit crime

Surachet said most of the suspects were "coloured" people working for football clubs or as English teachers, while some were Catholic priests.

Even when we "long time stayers"are usually law abiding citizens, the whole story leaves a very bitter taste.

Be careful if you are a football player, an English teacher, or a Catholic priest.

And if you are a priest, who teaches English and enjoys a game of football, then your time is up...

The last foreigner tourist police I saw was last week, entrance of Walking Street at a traffic stop (helmets, paperwork, ect).

He was Arab looking, wearing a Darth Vader type facemask and a black T-shirt at least 1 size too small.

Didn't look like a friendly face at all, more like a gym freak with a hard on for other foreigners.

So, obviously I ignored him and delt with the Thai traffic police.

They were weary but ok.

Not sure how you could tell he was Arab looking wearing a Darth Vader mask!!download.jpeg.7fe754c004edc085839ffee1cb4d2267.jpeg

I do carry my passport

I suggest you get it photocopied and reduced to credit card size and laminated. Your passport , as you well know, is too valuable an item to be carrying around everywhere on an everyday basis.

should we, long stay expats, be worried about efforts like this ?

No.

Quote

i believe we should, simply due to the prevailing thai attitude that anyone not thai is a tourist; how can these tourist police make an accurate snap judgment that we are either tourist or long-stay expat ?

It isn't about snap judgments and a snap judgment would make no difference anyway if you're all legal.

We could without yet more paranoia, victimism, and fear-mongering around here, thank you.

You have insurance so you put it in their hands and it is up to them to fix your car or pay you out and for them to chase the offending driver. The only insurance that you must have is the compulsory 3rd party insurance that you must produce to be able to register your car. In Australia we call it TAC 3rd party insurance and it is separate to comprehensive accident insurance. It is not illegal to not have comprehensive accident insurance, that is to pay for the damage to your car but it is up to your comprehensive accident insurance company to pay for your car and for them to claim against the other driver

So you arrive with a valid visa etc etc .

If stopped you can show it to the cops, where's the problem?

The problem?  More paperwork.  Invasive checks on where you are living.  Hassles on the street as police ask for papers and passports and visas, while you only have copies.  Many ways a proper person can be at the least inconvenienced

The problem for me would be I don't carry my passport around with me in my day to day life here bumping over the rough roads of Pattaya! I fear losing it.... I keep some pics on my phone. But the reality is I have never been asked for it in the many years I have been here. Let us hope it doesn't get as bad as you envisage.

I tried the website of the Tourist Police to get an idea of what they envisage is their remit, but I can't read Thai.

USA, UK, AUS, Canada, Central & South America, would you be inconvenienced to a lesser degree? I think not and chances at a long term visa would be far more expensive and difficult if not impossible. Stop all the complaining and embrace the fact Thailand welcomes law abiding folks from across the globe while at the same time attempts to cull out those who do not abide and make problems for all of us, Thai and farang alike. It is a balancing act Thailand does pretty well compared to most other countries. Does " Build that Wall " ring a bell ?

I must be from an alternate universe. If you are an immigrant from another country it goes without saying you need to carry and produce paperwork verifying you are legal. It also is required to understand and abide by the laws and terms of your visa . That's the deal from the jump, it is what you agreed to when you entered the country. If you no longer wish to abide to the agreement you made when you entered Thailand there are many international airports from which you can depart. I can't even understand the point you are trying to make. It's almost like reasoning with a 5 year old.

i could have applied for thai citizenship years ago. never bothered as don't want to be thai. you think that you should produce paperwork on the street? in 20 years not once have i been asked. keep photos of passport page and visa on phone but never been asked to produce. if they ever did, i would probably leave

**well use that as an excuse to leave with my mrs who can't accept that HCMC is soon to be home ; )

I never complained.  I simply listed some things that might happen.  And as for the build that wall thing, well, I didn't vote for Trump so don't generalized anybody else's behavior to anybody else

I remember the time tourist police was touted as help for foreigners. I guess they are helping the foreigners to get the hell out of Dodge now. How very nice of them.

I remember doing a lot of stuff for them, of course on voluntary basis. Time to change the wording...
