At least 16 killed and many injured in Korat road accident

I've driven this road many times and even in the photos you can see how poorly designed the road is..... and it was "improved" quite recently.

The adverse camber you mention is probably an answer to drainage.     However in most countries this is signed.

One of the most basic concepts of road safety on major roads is to separate traffic flowing in opposite directions; this has clearly been sacrificed for overall width. The central reservation is so narrow that only a concrete wall not Armco can be used, it also looks as if the wall may be to low to effectively deflect high vehicles. The profile of the concrete barrier is crucial. With long straights and sweeping tightening (compound) bends this road actively encourages speeding, brake failures and accidents. A classic example of how poor road design and engineering can turn human error into a major disaster.

Yet again, driver survives and does a runner !!! I really wish they would put a mandatory jail sentence on anyone fleeing the scene of an accident. If he gets beaten up by the crowd while he

  • I know there has been a loss of life here, and that is genuinely sad.   However, I’m waiting for the all-too-often-made calls to begin about banning double-decker buses as they’re dangerous.

In 90% of the accidents, the drivers need a good beating...

Agreed and the designers/builders need to be (further/better) educated!

There are plenty of road engineers in the world if Thailand decided to engage them, just as Thai industry engages experts and engineer from around the world.

The roads and vehicles come under the heading of Engineering which is one of the 5 tenets of road safety.

Road safety is a science the tenets are internationally recognised countries that have spent decades installing and implementing these measures have reduced road deaths and injuries to less than one tenth of Thailand's stats.

Apart from anything this saves a massive lost of income in the GDP.

Thailand is paying trillions for ignoring the science of road safety.

Correct, however as this is Thailand  no one from the top down cares as witnessed by the ongoing increase of road deaths.

This too is incorrect, there are several Thai, ASEAN and International organisations working in Thailand to improve and promote road safety and the general public are appalled and embarrassed by the death rates in the kingdom.

The problem is that those in authority are totally underinformed about road safety and think they know best although in reality they are grossly unaware. So instead of a long progressive year in, year out program they resort to a series of ineffective dictums whose only real purpose seems to be to convince a sceptical public that they are doing something.

Sadly without democracy and elections there is not much the Thai people cand to ensure in fugue, the people entrusted with these jobs are done so on merit rather than being a friendly face to the appointers.
