Military junta warns pro-election group against political rally

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) today (March 24) warned pro-election activists against breaching the law as the group held political activities at Thammasat University’s football field this evening.

NCPO spokesman Maj Gen Piyapong Klinphan said any movement by the group must not infringe on the rights and freedom of others.

They must not violate the orders of the NCPO or other relevant laws, he said in referring to the political gathering at TU to call for election this year in its effort to stop the military junta from ongoing clinging to power.

Absolutely inevitable and has been since 2006.

The Thais are sick of the endless cycle of coups and military leaders that think they know what's best without giving the population any say.

Where are the resident coup cheerleaders on this thread? Surprised they still have the audacity to appear now and again with their "but, but Thaksin" whataboutery. Rubes.

I think they know that a comeback is on the cards. Even after all these years of exile he still is popular.

Here he is 4 days ago in UAE with Yingluck and 11 hours ago with his daughter Ing.

They forget to mention 'the law' they are talking about is just a tool of their own making and couldn't exist in a country with decent rule.

Indeed, it should be a national duty for Thais to breach these so-called laws against public assembly and freedom of expression.

Thank you, Stephen. Exactly what I keep saying:
If the Thais stood up in their MILLIONS and engaged in civil disobedience towards wholly and utterly fake and illegitimate laws  - the junta would be powerless to put that genie of the liberated People back into the dark bottle of Repression and Oppression.

But the Thais have overwhelmingly made the decision (willingly or reluctantly) to go along unresistingly with all that is being flung at them, at their rights and their liberties, day in and day out.

There is a saying in English: 'You have made your bed - now lie on it ...'

There is also another, even more famous, saying: 'AS YOU SOW, SO SHALL YOU ALSO REAP'!

Doesn't even need to be in the MILLIONS. just a few thousand to start with and the fearful ones would gather pace and join

The fact after 4 years they can still only manage 300 speaks volumes.

The people need serious suppression by a brutal regime.

The junta are just to benign to bother with.!

This from a member of a military coup that overthrew an elected govt and enforced all sorts of outrageous laws and rules that are contrary to good sense and unhelpful to the population. They have done nothing BUT infringe on the rights and freedoms of good citizens. What a cheek!

I understand what you are saying (above) - but we saw in 2010 that when  several THOUSAND Red Shirts got together for a protracted period of demonstration and civil resistance in Bangkok, the military slaughtered nearly 100 persons of their number.

I'm afraid it really would take MILLIONS to eject the junta from the body politic ...

It has been disgraceful that people who benefitted from being bought up in a democracy supported the coup. And used this forum to express their views. Let the Thai people decide by voting

100 were killed in the chaos. Most certainly not all run over by tanks etc.

Claims and counter claims by all sides.. Terrorists responsible for a good many of those . Reality is after 3 months of paralysing the city the coup was mobilized. And rightly so! Enough is enough.

No more back up only 2k over 3 months? Again speaks volumes about what the other 60 million were thinking. Mostly disgust

The coup was in the making long before that. Even Suthep has admitted that.

I remember thinking while Suthep was being followed around Bangkok blowing his whistle to demand an end to corruption 'What are you thinking?  Not him, for God's sake!  Not him.'
