If Cohen used his own money, it’s still a campaign contributuion if it’s purpose was to benefit (or reduce harm to) the campaign. The amount also far exceeds the allowable amount of individual donations. The timing makes it hard to argue that it wasn’t for the benefit of the campaign. One, named Maria, was never heard from again. It's common for kid rapists to threaten a victim with: "If you tell anyone about this, you and your family will be killed."
