Nineteen teenagers, who were among 600 students participating in a three-day holiday camp at a Bangkok school, were hospitalised with severe diarrhoea and other symptoms on Tuesday morning.

Officials visited Satri Wittaya School and collected varioussamples of food, in particular the stir-fried basil and chicken with fried egg over rice that the students had for dinner on Monday evening. The food has been tested and the results should be known by Wednesday.

Many students attending the annual camp activities from Sunday to Wednesday developed severe diarrhoea, with vomiting and stomach pains. The school called the emergency services and 10 ambulances took the worst affected to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's General Hospital and Vajira Hospital.

Teenagers with milder symptoms were treated at the school's infirmary.

A Mathayom 5 student, who asked not to be named, said she had developed stomach pains and felt bloated after eating her dinner on Monday and had been suffering from diarrhoea throughout the night.

Many of her friends were also suffering with the same symptoms, she said.

The camp had been attended by high-schoolers aged 16-18 from 96 schools around the country.

Hope they get well soon.  Food poisoning is not fun.

Clean food are not a priority

Cheap dirty food are normal in Thailand, start taking care of your children

Recover well young people

Possibly bought off the nearest footpath stall in Styrofoam boxes.

Yeah, bumsprays that have been getting under people’s poopy bums all day

To be honest, Thai food hygiene is taken quite seriously and it is taught in school and again to vendors under local regulations.  Compare Thailand to other countries with similar climates and it fares much, much better, e.g. India, Laos, Cambodia, etc (or God forbid sub-Saharan Africa).

The problem with school catering is that they contract out to the lowest bidder whilst the school director pockets the difference. If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys (and norovirus, campylobacter, E. coli, tapeworms and so on)
