BANGKOK, 13th April 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has instructed relevant authorities to stringently monitor the safety of Songkran travelers, asking them to promote safe driving.

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha has regularly voiced his concern for citizens traveling during the Songkran holiday, especially those traveling to the north and northeast.

He has instructed soldiers, police and administrative officials to carefully plan safety and facilitation measures for the public, remarking that the public relations effort should emphasize ways to reduce road accidents rather than compiling accident or fatality statistics.

The PM pointed out the government has worked to establish over 2,000 checkpoints across the country to promote road safety and is urging public cooperation in driving under 90 kilometers per hour, limiting the duration of driving times, adhering to GPS tracks and maintaining vehicle integrity. The state is also working with double decker buses to ensure their safe operation.

On safety at congested terminals such as bus depots, train stations, piers and airports, the PM said he has called for a strict watch on criminals taking advantage of the crowds on the move, as well as on ticket prices which must be maintained at a fair rate. Authorities have been dispatched to provide needed information, aid lost children and make the overall travel experience a positive one.

The problem in my district is that all the checkpoints are on the south side of Thaton and thousands of mountain village kids are coming to the riverbanks from the other direction. 3 or 4 on a bike, many too young to drive, all no helmets. Not a policeman in sight where the illegal activity is taking place. Sitting in one place has a very limited effect.

An increase from last year of 6 deaths on the first and an increase of 17 deaths on the second day. They really don't give a flying <deleted>!

Checkpoints?.? Government workers sitting doing nothing but put in time to collect overtime. It's not the authorities , it's the macho driver's in their macho trucks driving like idiots. Checkpoints never stop them. They need police patrols rolling on the highways.

I found some of the culprits will forward to the BIB

General Prayut,

Its easy for you to stop being concerned over people travelling during Songkran.

As the man that professes to be in charge of the Country, all you have to do is declare that Songkran is held on THE SAME DAY for everybody all over the Country.

Thus people would not need to travel every day to a different region to Celebrate over and over again.

This would also aid Community spirit which is another concern of yours.

The PM clearly has no influence over his government or the people. The carnage continues despite his timid requests.

For a military guy he is seriously lacking a pair of cajones.

This POS lost ALL credibility when he said, on numerous occasions, that there wouldn't be a coup, and then pulled a coup.  Then, on top of that, came up with Article 44 with it's "god like" powers.

shoe shoe krab, take a Fanta with much ice....you'll feel better.

I was looking at a report on BBC News today about the Volvo EX90 which came out in 2002, 50000 have been sold and not one driver or passenger has been killed in one, Thatcham research say its the safest car they have ever seen so what is then? It uses cameras and radar to avoid collisions. It gives the driver an audio and visual warning and if no action is taken the car brakes automatically. The test shows accelerating toward the back of a vehicle and trying to cut across on coming traffic, something we will all be familiar with here, what it did show nor can it is how to avoid a car hurtling towards you!!

But the radar and camera systems if forced upon the local manufactures would certainly cut down on some of the accidents we continue to see here.

As a first easy step we could all wear seat belts and fine the ones who think they need to bother, heavily.

So all the B.I.B. ARE BEING WATCHED, interesting or what.

More criminal watches?  What brand and who loaned which one to whom?

At least cheap digital watches keep good time and can chime "Time for regime change".
