Netizens called for immediate action after dozens of novice monks were pictured playing computer games at a Surat Thani shop.

But the shop shot back at the criticism saying that it was just training in the use of computers.

At the end of the session the monks - under 15 - had been given just 15 minutes for themselves "to relieve stress" and play games.

The shop felt they had done nothing wrong saying that the young monks were under the supervision of older members of the clergy at all times and no law had been broken.

They were out of the shop before 8pm when it would have been against the law for them to be there, said the shop online.

Sixteen pictures were posted on the page of the shop in the folder: "Teaching novices to use computers".

Manager said comment was rife on the story with many people saying it was inappropriate and that some of the novices were not dressed properly either.

Pray tell what is so awful about them playing computer games for a few minutes?  There is nothing in the vows that prohibits enjoying oneself if it still falls within the moral code.

They didn't join ISIS or the taliban....

That's nowhere near enough practice to get past level 2 of Temple Run.

How is Buddhism a lie?

They are not full monks, they are kids for Christ's sake, give then a break.

i'm ok with whatever they do as long as it isnt power wanking on a public bus

In all fairness, better some time on a pc than drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse, theft and other miscreant behaviour they are up to these days.

Netizens in uproar over novice monks playing computer games???

I don´t hear that when they find two monks in a short time hotel crunching yaba and playing with prostitutes. Maybe that ain´t so bad.

They are Naenes  ( not ordained monks as they are not yet 18) and do have as many rules as ordained monks do, including dress code.

And therein lies the problem - kids are given a break in everything they do and as a result they grow up, (if not killed on a motorcycle), having a sense of entitlement - not being held responsible for their actions.  This feeling entitlement is not limited to Thailand but seems to be a worldwide phenomenon.

I prefer a novice monk getting 15 minutes of play time on a computer, to senior monks playing on their smartphones during a funeral as I have witnessed.

Naen, it has no plural.

Are monks expected to have no life??? Seems harmless.
