Netizens called for immediate action after dozens of novice monks were pictured playing computer games at a Surat Thani shop.

But the shop shot back at the criticism saying that it was just training in the use of computers.

At the end of the session the monks - under 15 - had been given just 15 minutes for themselves "to relieve stress" and play games.

The shop felt they had done nothing wrong saying that the young monks were under the supervision of older members of the clergy at all times and no law had been broken.

They were out of the shop before 8pm when it would have been against the law for them to be there, said the shop online.

Sixteen pictures were posted on the page of the shop in the folder: "Teaching novices to use computers".

Manager said comment was rife on the story with many people saying it was inappropriate and that some of the novices were not dressed properly either.

How is Buddhism a lie?

They are not full monks, they are kids for Christ's sake, give then a break.

Netizens in uproar over novice monks playing computer games???

I don´t hear that when they find two monks in a short time hotel crunching yaba and playing with prostitutes. Maybe that ain´t so bad.

And therein lies the problem - kids are given a break in everything they do and as a result they grow up, (if not killed on a motorcycle), having a sense of entitlement - not being held responsible for their actions.  This feeling entitlement is not limited to Thailand but seems to be a worldwide phenomenon.

I prefer a novice monk getting 15 minutes of play time on a computer, to senior monks playing on their smartphones during a funeral as I have witnessed.

They are Naenes  ( not ordained monks as they are not yet 18) and do have as many rules as ordained monks do, including dress code.

Naen, it has no plural.
