Bangkok Bank Lost Passbook

Recommended Posts

The bank is saying I need to go to the police station and original branch of opening (Phuket) to get a new passbook. This seems extremely hard.

Are there any alternatives to this process? I live in Bangkok and I'm trying to get a copy of my statement since opening my account in full.

A police report will certainly be needed.

Any branch should be able to issue a new book.

On their website it says:

Quote

What if I cannot find my passbook or it is stolen?

You should cancel your passbook if it has been lost or stolen so that no one else can withdraw funds from your bank account. In the meantime, you can still use your ATM card or cheque book to access that account. If you wish the Bank to issue a new passbook for you, please bring your citizen ID card and a police report on the stolen passbook to your home branch.

That was consistent with what the branch told me.

Yeap, with Bangkok Bank they will refer you to your home branch if you "lost  your passbook/it got stolen."

Now if the passbook is just "full" any full service Bangkok Bank branch will issue you another one.

In their infinite wisdom and customer service, Thai bank branches are separate entities.

You will indeed need to go to the original branch to get new book.

In fairness I believe the bank books are used primarily because millions of Thai villagers hold these and like using them. It is a bank statement in their hand. And must serve as form of ID at the bank. But still...

Open a new account at Bangkok Bank branch in BKK, transfer any balance on old account into new account via online banking, close old account (or leave as zero and they'll close it for you after a year or so).

Probably easier than police report and trip to original branch.

He said he was trying to get a record of transactions for the account.  Closing one account and opening a new one won't help with that.

Sometimes it's more useful more useful to keep the old account alive

If you transfered in money from abroad etc it can be useful to have proof of your money sources

I recently had to do the police report and go back to a branch I haven't set foot in for 12 years so the op is not the only one

Oddly enough, they want you to report in the precinct where you lost the item and then they want you to say where you lost it. I suggest you go to Lumpini station because they have English speakers who volunteer to help. I said my bankbook fell into the klong getting off the river boat at Pratunam

So you can just cancel the bank book and go on with your life bankbookless, at least until you happen to find yourself in Phuket. It's not actually needed, as long as you have some acceptable form of ID. Bank books are silly things anyway, I'm sure you don't have one for your account(s) in farangland.

yea....almost 10 years ago the spare tire off the SUV got stolen...the wife and I were pretty 100% positive it happened over a certain 20 hour time frame.  During that timeframe we have been in three different provinces (Bangkok plus 2 provinces) and parked in 3 or 4 malls (one of which was MBK) where the theft could have occurred.  The insurance company needed a police report.  That when we found out you must report to the police station with responsibility for the area where the theft occurred.

Heck our travels over that 20 hour period probably covered "dozens" of different police station areas of responsibility.  We ended up just going to the police station for our home area and told them the theft occurred at a bus station under that police station's area of responsibility.  Got the report...gave it to the insurance company...got reimbursed for the stolen tire.

Wrong. Bank often demands the book.

Not in my experience. I wanted to do that in my local branch in Kalasin Province and they told me I had to do a 1400 km round-trip to my branch in Bangkok. They were serious, so that's what I did on my next trip to the city. Of course I could move my account in Bangkok to my local branch but there are two obstacles to that. 1 - It isn't possible to do it the easy way and simply transfer the account from one branch to another. 2 - There is no guarantee I'd be allowed to open a new account at my local branch. The staff all seem to make up their own rules, and me being a foreigner in a small town would probably give them a headache. Also, I get my pensions from the UK paid into the Bangkok account and it's a hassle to change all that.

I just went through something similar with Bangkok Bank. If you Google "anal retentive," they appear in the first 15 results. They are absolute, will not budge, and in some ways it IS to protect your account.

Same here. My signature had changed over the last 10 years, so when my passbook needed replacing, I couldn't get them to look the same to these handwriting analysis experts aka bank tellers. Didn't matter that I had my passport, Thai driver's license and ATM card from Bangkok Bank. I had to go to the originating branch to get a new passbook with my current signature. Again, anal retentive!

From Bangkok Bank website regarding missing/stolen passbook.

Additionally, you can now get Bangkok Bank savings account "without passbooks"....they are called Statement Savings Accounts.  You still get a debit card, can withdraw or deposit at a branch if desired....have ibanking...etc...etc...etc.

The police report definitely.

In my experience only the branch where the account was opened will issue a replacement book.

Also if  you haven't updated your passport details you may well also need any passports (even cancelled ones) you have had between the one you had when you opened the account and the one you are using now

Wow. All I can say is that this is all just ... wow.

What if your original bank branch is no longer there? Bank branches close, move around, and merge from time to time, right?

If #6 is correct and applies to the OP, then I wonder whether he'll be able to get statements for his old account even if he goes to Phuket. They may say "no statements without bank book", and "no bank book, have to make new account", and "to make new account, cancel old one", and "cannot get statements for cancelled account".

If the OP is going to be in that catch-22, then I agree with regedit. Give up on the statements, and just get the money out and start over:

  • 2 months later...

Wow. I'd close the account then. With your name, account number and some phony ID I think someone could drain your account. Does the passbook also have a copy of your official signature for them to practice signing (just to put all the security eggs in one basket...)
