Perhaps that Chinese plastic egg and rice factory could diversify to take up the slack.

When you buy fried chicken in China, you will notice that, under the skin, more than half of the meat is removed and substituted by rice! The Chinese just love it, so, perhaps, a business idea for Thailand: filling up half the durian with rice - double the durian sales and profits, while making costumers in China happy... :partytime2:

I think "complain" in the story is a bad translation. Why would farmers complain about high prices and 100% sales? They might regret not being able to produce enough for the demand but complain? No.

My thought too. Regret would make sense, regret not having more to sell.

They sell all their harvest, for higher prices, yet still complain !!!

There's no pleasing some people.. (that's just what Jesus said, Sir)

Next season there will be a glut as all the farmers jump on the bandwagon and grow durian and the farmer moaning they can't sell it.

See, this is Alibaba investment. Exporting the good things and keep the bad ones for local consumption!

Exactly as they do in China! While some products from China have a good reputation in the world, every Chinese knows that what's not exported, but sold in China, is prone to break easily.

"Durian growers in Trat province have complained of not enough of the 'king of fruits' to meet the demand of buyers in China and they have to get the fruit from other provinces."

As with every other law in Thailand, the law of supply and demand is being ignored. Why don't they just do what they've done over the past few years? When Chinese demand outpaced supply, they increased the price. They've already priced durian beyond what most Thais are willing to pay. However, as long as the Chinese are willing to pay anything for durian, just increase the price until it reaches the point where demand reaches the amount of existing supply.
Absolutely correct.

Durian.jpg

Couple of years ago you'd get two pieces this size for around the same price. The below pic was four years ago.

Be lucky to get this for under Bt200 now. More like Bt250.

Illogical article.

I can understand Thai people complaining that all the Durian has been bought by the Chinese, or that the price is too high as a result of lower local supply.

But Sellers complaining because they don't have enough durian to satisfy demand? That's nonsensical.

Plant more or let other regions make some money.

Greedy.

So next up, use whatever chemicals you can to increase the yield, sell them unripe, whatever you can to maximize quick profit and then see alibaba ban the substandard products, when the sector has all but been destroyed.

Welcome to Thailaaaaan, anything for a buck.
