BANGKOK, 4th May 2018 (NNT) – The Ministry of Transport is stepping up the improvement of public transport systems to accommodate welfare cards, looking to have the cards applicable on the Blue and Purple rail lines by this July and on the Airport Rail Link and 2,600 public buses by October.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) is now considering the use of 200,000 Spider Cards it is to receive from the Transport and Traffic Policy Plan Office.

MRTA is also to speak to Bangkok Mass Transit System Public Company Limited (BTSC) about how to introduce the cards. It will suggest either the BTSC trial the cards in an initial phase or wait for EMV standards to be set so that it may join the MRT in introducing use of the cards in December of 2019.

MRTA is to meet with all relevant transport providers this May 15-17 to go over technical and business details of the card.

Better form yet another committee and delay the cards for another year or so ......
