I wonder if anyone out there can help me out with this PITA? I have a few PC's / Laptops at home that I connect with to the internet and network. At the moment, the problem exists with one main PC and one laptop.

I will try to explain the problem. (all machines are running Win 10 x64 April update)

There is one Linksys router that has ethernet and wifi, currently all connections are going via ETHERNET.

When I look at my main PC it is connected via Ethernet 1000/1000 and is connected to the network named " HOME" 

When I check the laptop, it is connected via Ethernet to the network named " HIGHSPEED" and is on 100/100 speed - This is what is confusing me.

 

The router identification is " HOMENETWORK"  192.168.1.1, subnet 255.255.255.0

The router has two WiFi bands with the following details -

2.4GHz. Wireless mixed mode - SSID is " HOME" .

5 GHz. Band is A/C only and has the SSID " HIGHSPEED"

 

The Main PC is connected with IP address 192.168.1.102/24

Laptop is on 192.168.1.101/24

Both are using DHCP address reservations stored on the router so these IP addresses never change.

 

Bothe machines have WiFi but this is switched off, Main PC is 192.168.1.116 and the laptop is on 192.168.1.105

 

NEITHER computer has WIFI enabled or switched on, they are both on the same Ethernet.

Can someone please please please tell me why one is connected to the HOME ID and the other is connected to the HIGHSPEED id, when they should both be on the same settings? Is it something to do with the Gigabit connection and the 100/100 on the laptop?

 

I believe that this is the reason that I am having problems linking them together over the LAN and via Ethernet cable.

 

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

 

Never used win 10 so I'm guessing but...

  go to control panel/system/computer name

and change the "workgroup" name to   " HOMENETWORK"

Nah, that isn't it either, they are both already on the same workgroup, thanks all the same.

PITA – (Portable Instrument for Trace Acquisition) - cannot imagine anyone would want to help - these things are legal minefields. Of course your acronym could mean other things - thats the problem with using acronyms...

Pain in the arse

 

When you first created the network this is what your network profile name was automatically named or you named it to that.

To change the profile name open regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles look for the network profile and rename it, pull out the network cable and put it back in and it should change.

This is not the reason you are having issues linking them.

Thank you so much for your help! You have sorted it out perfectly. You have no idea how long that damn thing has been driving me CRAZY! I thought it was related to the WiFi and could not understand how it was working on Ethernet, again, many thanks!

No problem, having spend countless hours/late nights/weekends trawling MS Technet forums for answers i feel your pain!

Wow good work 2008bangkok sorting that out. I would have maybe been on google many hrs trying to figure it out.
