Report Philippine Army Probes Hazing Death of Rookie Soldier
Photo courtesy of PhilStar In a tragic incident that has shocked the military community, the Philippine Army is investigating the death of Private Charlie Patigayon, who collapsed during reception rites at a military base in Maguindanao del Sur. This sombre event has prompted immediate action, with two officers relieved of their duties and investigations launched against 21 others. Private Patigayon's untimely demise occurred shortly after his welcoming ceremony at the 6th Infantry Battalion headquarters on 30th July. The 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division reported that he collapsed during the event, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was declared dead the following day. In response, the Philippine Army has taken resolute measures by relieving a first lieutenant and a second lieutenant, who were directly supervising Patigayon, from their posts. Army spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala confirmed this decisive action, emphasising the Army's firm stand against hazing, in accordance with the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018. Dema-ala reiterated the Army's commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on hazing and similar practices that endanger soldiers' well-being. "The individuals involved in the incident have been immediately relieved of their duties and are currently under investigation," he noted, assuring that those found guilty will face strict penalties under military justice and relevant laws. The investigation, still ongoing, aims to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Patigayon’s death. While initial medical findings indicate kidney failure as the cause, the Army is scrutinising all potential factors. Interestingly, Lieutenant Colonel Roden Orbon mentioned that a blood clot might have led to Patigayon's collapse, showing that multiple angles are being explored. In addressing the tragic consequences of this incident, the Army has vowed to provide full support to Patigayon's family. "While no form of compensation can ever replace the life of a soldier, we are committed to honouring Pvt. Patigayon’s service and to easing the burden on his loved ones," Dema-ala stated, underscoring the Army's dedication to pursuing justice. The Army's actions reflect a broader commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of all its personnel. This event has prompted a re-evaluation of traditional reception rites, which are integral to welcoming new soldiers. The tragedy has sparked broader discussions about the military's initiation traditions and their potential hazards. While these ceremonies are revered for fostering camaraderie, ensuring they don't compromise recruits’ health is pivotal. The Army's current stance and actions might lead to reforms in how such traditions are upheld. As the investigation continues, the Army maintains transparency and accountability. They are determined to identify any lapses and enforce necessary changes to prevent future tragedies. This incident has unified various sectors in condemning hazing, spotlighting the need for vigilant enforcement of anti-hazing laws. The Philippine Army's response serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of safety and respect for life within military ranks. The outcome of this investigation will be closely watched, not just within the Philippines but by military organisations worldwide, as it tackles the delicate balance between tradition and modern values. The hope is to evolve these practices, ensuring they honour the brave individuals who serve, without putting them at risk. Private Patigayon's death, while deeply tragic, has sparked vital dialogue and action. The investigation's progress and results will be crucial in shaping future policies and safeguarding soldiers' lives. The Army's commitment to rooting out hazardous practices offers a stark promise of change and reform in military traditions, aiming to honour lives rather than endanger them. Why long-term expats in Thailand say insurance is worth every baht
Actually the commercial exploitation of that small difference was invented by the Prudential Assurance Co. almost 2 centuries ago. A minor selling point, I guess - you're insured against what you can be assured of, namely death. My father was one of the reps in NZ in the late 40s-70s ('The Man from the Prudential'). -

Who likes to cook?
Cook a lot when 'back home' but in Thailand it's a real case of "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Too damn hot here. Plus I like things that aren't so easily available in Thailand or are really expensive (sausages for toad in the hole; streaky bacon for flavour in risotto; swede; leeks in a cheese sauce mmmm) ... One good thing about cooking in Thailand is that it's still mostly gas; UK and most other western countries are moving to electric for everything. I hate those f##king induction hobs; gas is so much more controllable (although electric ovens are good). -

Report Trump Deploys Nuclear Subs Amid Russia Tensions
True, submarines are clandestine. While they may be in the area there location is unknown. More so than a carrier battle group. CBG are announced all the time and are much easier to locate. Russian boats will have a hard time finding US boats You're blowing this out of proportion only because Trump ordered it. Absolutely no other reason. If Biden ordered the same you would be applauding him.
