BANGKOK, 24 May 2018 (NNT) - More than 700 retail and wholesale stores will offer up to 50% discounts on household items under the Ministry of Commerce’s new campaign to shoulder the cost of living for Thais.

The campaign will be carried out from June 25th -30th and August 11th-15th at selected stores across the country, offering up to 50% discount on everyday goods. Around 500 million baht of cash flow can be expected during these periods.

Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Sontirat Sontijirawong said in response to public concerns over rising food prices that the recent cooking gas price hike can only increase the cost of ready-to-eat meals by no more than 20 satang per dish according to his calculation.

In light of higher diesel prices, the Department of Internal Trade will closely monitor commodity prices nationwide to see if there is a significant impact on consumers. Manufacturers of various goods have also been invited to a meeting on Friday to discuss with commerce officials over the matter.

A little research needed and me and my extended Thai family are ready to hoard those half price household goods. A years supply of half price washing powder. A years supply of washing up liquid. Oh yes, thank you junta.

Not only will it save me a fortune, I want have to go to 'Big C' for a whole year!

These useless tiny brass coins finally might have a purpose then. Although I doubt it.

What was the incentive for the selected stores to offer the discounts if the MoC is the driving force behind this campaign?

I think it's simple.....a scheme for their mates who are in retail.....and call it a stimulus

A populist policy disguised as a stimulus.

Used by all kind of governments, I gather, mostly in the past.

Fair enough.

Other governments didn't refute them though, and then implement a series of similar policies in disguise.

Thai Nayom policy is another example, along with the oil hike subsidy proposed today.

They've been doing these kinds of government-promoted supposed promotional sale/periods at various times for years, and as best as I could ever tell, it never translated into discounts on anything we ever buy at any of the supermarkets we routinely use (Big C, Tesco, Tops, etc etc).

So either the whole thing is just another government scam to try to fool the average Thai person into believing the government is doing anything to help them, or, the things and places that involve the discounting are so obscure as to be irrelevant.

I have it on good authority that all the HiSo BKK shopping malls will be offering up to 80% off selected items in June.

Just like they do every month.

You mean "every week", of course...

“To offer 50% cheaper”

is entirely different than

“up to 50% discounts”.

( measley 2% or 10% off qualifies as “up to”).

Low quality, deceptive marketing!
