PHUKET: A clear majority of respondents to an online poll have called for the government to make marijuana legal in Thailand.

Marijuana is still a drug under Thai law and its use for medical purposes requires strict legal control measures.

According to the Narcotics Act, the planting of the marijuana plant is allowed for medical purposes but use of the plant does not extend to medical research involving humans.

Yes, quite agree.

Today they'll be smoking Marijuana, & tomorrow they'll be "banging up China White"

However, 50% voted yes, so what about the other 50%, or is that ignored in the Cannabis jingoism?

The Mexican drug cartels LOVE the legalization in America's western states. Why? They can now sell their product cheaper to the stores selling it legally. So, they increase their volume of sales altho at a lesser price, but higher amounts. The stores love it because they have a virtually unlimited supply to sell at a greater profit. So just WHO is profiting from this?

Before I am jumped on, I do think that recreational and medicinal use should be de-criminalized.But all is not gold that glitters.

As if there aren't enough drug and alcohol fueled problems in this country already.

Why would the authorities consider making it legal when the police can arrest a foreigner and demand 200,000 baht for having possession of just one "joint" or it's off to gaol for months?

Then, when inside, the prison officers demand money for extra food or medicine.

It's simply too lucrative for the corrupt to make legal.

Meanwhile, a Thai, for the same possession, pays only hundreds of baht "to walk."

Never going to happen.

A cry that has been heard around the world for a very long time.

We have seen the resistance, which is slowly crumbling.

Got to come sooner or later.

Thailand should maybe, go with the flow, with where it is going to end up. :stoner:

Edit: And Government is supposed to respect the will of the majority of its voters, right? A full 50%, means more than half. (If repeated nationwide.)

Actually it's 94% in some way or another, it was only 6% that said no.

I think the time is coming, some people in the govt have been leaning towards this for the past 3-4 years.  Hopefully it will happen soon.
