Air Chief Marshal Chalee Chanruang sleeps during Thursday’s budget meeting.

BANGKOK — After images of lawmakers snoozing during debate of next year’s proposed multi-trillion baht budget incensed taxpayers, two of the nappers gave flaccid explanations as the junta leader berated their behavior.

Air Chief Marshal Chalee Chanruang and Thamrong Tassananchalee, two members of the National Legislative Assembly, dodged questions or offered excuses for why they were sleeping like logs during Thursday’s session. Junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha chastised the mostly elderly nap-takers and threatened not to re-appoint them.

Maybe get the PMs nephew - his construction business is BOOMING - to install a supplemental electrical system to each to the chairs, and then the PM can "jolt" sleepy members back to life?

Cannot! It will blow up a couple of pacemaker.

"Junta leader Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha said he warned assembly members not to fall asleep during meetings again at risk of losing their positions."

On the other hand Prayut has no issue with MP's (typically 7-20) who have been excessively absent from NLA voting. So long as they submit leave of absence to the NLA president beforehand. So maybe Chalee can sleep undisturbed if beforehand he lets the NLA president know he'll be falling asleep during the session.

“Enough. Your question is nonsense. None of your questions have value!” he said.

That's exactly the response they wanted. Prayuth still hasn't learned in any way how to brush off the media or criticism with even a touch of panache.

What are his advisors telling him, or is he even capable of listening to advice?

It has nothing to do with what happens in the UK or US.

Right you are.  We all know Thailand exists in a vacuum not to be compared with any other culture or people or time and place.  What is normal or abnormal in Thailand is not judged normal or abnormal any other place in the world.  Nothing in Thailand not food nor education nor women is comparable to any other country.

Other culture and people don’t have regular coups and none mentioned here are living under a military government nor have articles 112 and 44. Maybe that is uniguely Thai.

Why were they asleep?

A. Because they're lazy pigs stationed at their berth at the trough

B. Because they were 'poorly'

Aw bless.

Not poorly enough to stay at home though, no money for being poorly or sleeping at home.

Not poorly enough to stop them dressing in their regulation Thai silk clothes and making the arduous journey in a grace and favour air-conditioned limo to Government House.

And not too poorly to prevent them holding their hand out for the money.

Genuine Thais then... on the take.

Well at least they were present, I seem to recall attendance by "MPs", if they can be called that, is less than universal!

Indeed. And a certain PM too!

And at least these guys weren't looking at porn like some previous MP's.
