How does Poste Restante work?

Recommended Posts

I need to send a parcel from Norway to Thailand using general mail. The problem is that I don't yet have a permanent address in Thailand. I understand that I can write Poste Restante as receiver like this, and they will keep it at the main post office in Bangkok:

Mr. John DOE
Poste Restante
General Post Office
Charoen Krung Rd.
Bangkok 10500 THAILAND

Norway post states on their webpage that there is no parcel tracking for worldwide shipping. How can I know when the parcel is ready for collection in Bangkok?

Why bother.

Because there isn't any other good alternative. Extra baggage with Thai Airways costs 44 GBP per kg. DHL is also too expensive. I don't have enough stuff to fill a container.

where do you plan to stay for the first few weeks, or the first few days even?

AirBnB or apartment for the first month. But I read that the delivery time may exceed four weeks for a standard mail parcel.

Better if you book a place to stay in advance and use that as the address, especially if its boxes

I guess I could talk to the owner of the apartment and arrange something.

Are you sure about no package tracking? Norway is party to global EMS according to this website.

posten.no  has online tracking here.

Email them on [email protected]   see their website

or call them on (+47) 21 31 62 60

Typically when an inbound package clears Thai Customs, it is trackable on Thailand Posts tracking website using the original 3rd party issued tracking number.
