Phuket taxi driver dodges ‘flee the scene’, drunk driving charges

The Phuket News

The news follows Capt Eakkasak Kwanwan of the Thalang Police confirming to The Phuket News this morning (June 18) that the driver, who police have not named, will face only one charge: reckless driving causing damage to property.

The accident on June 4 saw the white Fortuner, registered as a Phuket taxi, end up buried in undergrowth in a field in Thalang after the vehicle wiped out a roadside sign and came to rest after hitting a power pole.

Taxi mafia is obviously mightier than police.

Regardless, Capt Eakkasak today said, “He did not flee the scene. The driver did not escape. He went to the police station after the incident.”

However, Capt Eakkasak’s description of events today did not include that Capt Eakkasak himself had confirmed to The Phuket News earlier that the driver did not present himself to Thalang Police Station until the next day (June 5).

Brown envelopes,  like gravity, are capable of bending the fabric of space-time. Somchai could easily have traveled back in time to present himself at the police station.

About time fleeing the scene became an offence in itself- nothing to do with 'taxi mafias'- this happens with drivers all the time.

I know it did not have TAXI emblazoned on the side my friend but the OP that I read claimed said vehicle was registered as a TAXI

Never mind I wont take umbrage and I do forgive you for your inattention to the minor details  555555555555

From what I understand, fleeing the scene of an accident is not really considered a crime here. It is more or less expected, as the majority of Thai men do not have the ability to take responsibility for a situation they have caused, own up to it, and do the right thing. So, fleeing is the first instinct for most. I have witnessed situations where the police caught someone fleeing from the scene of an accident, and there was no penalty, reprimand, or fine. Perhaps if there is a death, it is a different story.

Especially on the southern islands, where there is very little law and order. The toy cops will let you off for just about any crime, if you have some cash. And typically the taxi mafias are far more powerful than the cops. Perhaps even more powerful than the impotent army.

Where is the name of the owner of the Taxi License which should be on the side of the vehicle?

HELLO- there are plenty of Fortuners, Sportriders, MU-7 and believe it or not assorted other SUVs used as taxis in Phuket. We thank you for the input from Jomtien though!

An amicable arrangement was made which suited both parties. The 'law' very seldom enters into such decisions.

If have a green number plate then it's a registered taxi. While can't seen the plate in that photo given the stickers on the side it's a likely legal taxi.  And for sure all these non metered taxis are privately owned.
