What do you do during long bus/minibus rides?

Have a 9 hour ride coming up. From what I've read (and remember) any work done on a laptop is impossible. What do you guys do? I think I'll load up a few audiobooks and buy a battery pack for the phone.

Lots of smart Alek remarks. Of course, some bus drivers are wild. Nakhonchaiair are the best I know here.

If you've got a smartphone/tablet AND Netflix and/or Iflix then PRE download a few films/programmes and you're made.

Avoid minibus! They were designed as general trade vans for urban use. They have minimal structural strength and survival of passengers poor in event of crash. Crashes likely as minibuses typically driven at limit of the capacity of engine and brakes, plus high frequency of incompetent, sleepy, or drug or alcohol compromised drivers. Avoid like plague.

That of course is if you don't want your eardrums shattered by one of the inane Thai comedy shows which are always played on long trips.

never travel by van

never travel by bus

never use Nakhonchaiair

Air conditioning is a curse or a blessing. I always wear a jacket when travelling ... in case the driver or pilot is an Eskimo ... easy to remove if necessary. There are blankets on NCA buses too.

1) I look at the driver's eyes to make sure he is not on yaba. (red or wide open) Once I had to postpone my trip because of this. Yes, I have been in tourist vans that went way too fast.

2) Make sure there is a seat belt to wear. Do not sit way in the back (just in case there is a collision).

3) I look at my smart-phone; read a book; listen to my tunes; or sleep.

4) I am not much of a person to socialize with for an entire trip.

The sound on NCA is in seat and you can switch it off.
