I make 22,000 pounds here in the UK, and am looking to move to Thailand following my family. I was wondering what a comparable wage is in Thailand? After tax I make around £18,000, which translates to something like 800,000 baht. I'm not sure what kind of salaries to expect in Thailand so could use some advice of what general things cost over there. Thanks! ?

Is that per month or per year?

If you're looking for a mathematically comparable salary, keep in mind the annual GDP per capita in Thailand is about 1/6 of what it is in the UK ($6,600 vs $39,700).  So, a comparable salary would be in the neighborhood of 3,000 GBP.

If you had the support of a big family, and lived with your parents, you could live on that, but you'd be pretty miserable.

A better question would be to ask the going rate for the type of job you'd be doing.  But I suspect the answer will be "foreigners can't do that legally" or "good luck getting hired when they can hire a local or Burmese for 1/4 the money, and no immigration hassles"  for about half the schemes that guys hatch to move to LO(C)S.

LOS is Land of Smiles, but I changed it to Land of Cheap Sex, since that seems to be the major draw for first time posters bound and determined to move to Thailand.   At 3,000 GBP per annum, it needs to be real cheap.

Your post is a little confusing.

Are you suggesting you will have an overseas income of 18,00 pounds and want to see how that compares, or are you thinking you will get work here paying that kind of money?

If you are coming over with that income it's about 7 times Thai minimum wage which fine.

If you plan on working for that here, you better be a highly qualified specialist and qualify for one of the Non-Thai job categories.

Teaching English which many people revert to pays 3 times minimum wage and is a struggle for most.

This is what you after "purchasing power parity"

https://data.oecd.org/conversion/purchasing-power-parities-ppp.htm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP)_per_capita

If you're asking about potential net earnings, then you'll have to tell us what you plan to do here. If you're a labourer, you could earn around £2500 p.a. but you would not be allowed to do it. If you work as an English teacher (language school) and you put in a lot of hours, around £12,000 p.a.

800,000 baht a month. I have a Thai friend that makes about that – around 10 million a year, unfortunately before tax, which sums up about 25% – are you in the same trade as he..?

It's depending of what you do, and your CV (experience), and if you're looking for employment in an international company, or a Thai company.

If your annual income is around 800,000 baht, and you wish a fairly Okay life-style for a family, you'll easily spend 800,000 baht a year; however if you have kids, and wish to send them to international school, you shall count another minimum 400,000 baht per child a year, and up to little more than a million, if you look for top-end schools.

There is a Thai Salary Guide (2018) available here for free download. Mind you, that some positions are not legally available for foreigners.
