PHUKET: Construction of the quietly-under-construction “Central Patong” shopping mall in the heart of Phuket’s busiest tourism town is slated to be complete by year’s end with hopes that the new mall will be open in time for the new year, a source has told The Phuket News.

Mukda Chirathivat Uawattanakul and Rattana Chirathivat Norapatlop of the Central Group conglomerate’s Chirathivat founding family were in Phuket last Friday (June 29) for the foundation stone ceremony at the site.

Also present for the ceremony was Central Department Store Limited Chief Operating Officer Piyapong Tanyasrisang PhD, who is currently named as head of Central Pattana Group (CPN), which acts as the development arm of the Central Group, along with Suchart Chaiyamongkol, currently named as branch manager for Central Patong while the project is under construction, and Warunee Cheunyen, named as the Assistant Managing Director for Central Patong.

In September I was in Phuket and did not think much about the construction work opposite Jungceylon.

Now I know.

And don't forget to build a skywalk from one to the other

Took the city fathers so many years to install the pedestrian traffic lights ?

And from Pattaya experiences I was puzzled that they are mostly observed

I am sure in keeping with all the other established businesses (especially fast food retailers) Central will have 'Patong Prices' in this new mall one example being KFC - the price premium is a complete RIP OFF...

Interesting. Didn't know Central was eyeing Patong.  Then again the article did say "quietly-under-contruction"

Noticed the new Central mall opposite the existing one in town is making leaps and bounds, and the overpass is in place.
Anyone know when it is due to open?  Looks to be another year off, but then again they are going at top speed

This is sure to cause a major blow to Jungceylon. I would expect all of the CRG-owned businesses currently in Jungceylon to relocate to the new mall owned by their parent company.

This includes Robinson's, PowerBuy, and SuperSports. That's a lot of retail space to be abandoned.

My guess is that Big C (CRG joint venture with Casino) would remain at Jungceylon, due to its size.
