Yellow Tabien Baan (House Registration Book) / Non-Thai ID but actually renting in different province?

With a few exceptions you can use your House Registration book and the Thai ID card for foreigners in exactly the same way and for the same purposes the Thais use their proof of address and ID.

You say a foreigner can use the pink id card for the same purposes as a Thai can use the Thai ID card? Not even closely

I know many things for which a Thai just needs his ID card, but a foreigner could not use the pink ID card. The pink ID card is not even accepted just for identification purposes everywhere.

You don't need it for extension but it can be proof of address at the immigration office when required.

What do you use it for? I only use it as ID at Thai government hospitals. I don't know if i am getting a discount because there were no one to compare to.

I use it to check into hotels and when I go to the bank. Previously a passport was always required for the latter and sometimes for the former. I  use it to replace having to carry my passport

My yellow house book is in Bangkok. I've never lived at that address. The special branch police head in Bangkok suggested I did it when applying for citizenship.

The law states that you can register on any tabien bahn. You can have more than one house !!

My non-Thai ID card is from another province. That pink ID is pretty useless.

When renewing my drivers licence in my province, I showed my yellow book from Bangkok, no problem. They didn't accept the pink ID from the same province.

My Thai friend would put me on their Yellow Tabien Baan (House Registration Book) and help me to obtain Non-Thai ID.

Since when has Thai's been issued with "Yellow" Tabien Baan? All the Thai's that I know including my wife all have "Blue" Tabien Baan's, so how is the OP's Thai friend going to put him in their "Yellow" Tabien Baan and being a farang he cannot be put in the "Blue" Tabien Baan so something does not sound right with this. I think the OP would have to apply for his own "Yellow" Tabien Baan and I know that at some of the Amphur offices they require a Residence Certificate from immigration or they will not issue a "Yellow" Tabien Baan. I have just gone through this in Khon Kaen.

Please don't over analyze the colors. I messed them up. My friend has no ideas what colors are for whom but my friend is cool about putting me into the house book.

Is it a different thing about having a Residence Certificate on an address where I am not actually staying? Bad? How bad?

Why? Thais have house book registries for where they are not actually living.

What does immigration have to do with getting a yellow house book? They are issued at an Amphoe.

When I applied for a yellow book in Chonburi, as part of the application, I had to make a statement which included stating my immigration status and history in Thailand. That information was forwarded to Immigration at Jomtien to be checked against the actual records that are held by Immigration. So, although you might not be applying to Immigration directly for a Yellow book, they certainly do have an indirect and important input into your application.

You dont need a yellow book for extension of stay at immigration. In the 35 years that I have been living here, I would never have found a single use for it. However, if you got a non Thai pink ID, it is useful.

While having a yellow book isn't vital it is much more convenient if you do have one.

And in your quote you have just given the first reason as to why a yellow book is useful................to get a (useful) Pink ID card you MUST first possess a yellow book.?

That may be the process in your District, is certainly isn't the norm to contact Immigration for any information at all.

In my District, the 'Housemaster' must attend and sign a form agreeing to allow you to use their address.

A copy of their Tabien Baan and ID card is sufficient to prove the address.

The process to obtain a Yellow book can vary from Amphur to Amphur. There is no right, or wrong. Just the process you must follow as laid down by your Amphur.

That was also necessary when I applied. My wife had to sign a form to confirm she agreed to my application and supply a copy of her tabien baan and ID card, plus we had to take somebody with us to confirm I/we lived at that address.......but as an extra check somebody from the Amphur was sent to interview our neighbours for confirmation that we lived there as well.

I agree that the process can vary greatly from Amphur to Amphur but people should be aware of the information some areas might insist on.

Not sure it is against the law.

Many Thai's have no choice since they cannot be registered in a house book for where they are actually living. They do not own a house and cannot get permission of the house master where they are living to do it. Many stay in rented rooms, apartments, houses and etc.

I always understood this was the original reason for the yellow book, not for foreigners but for temporary registration of accommodation for Thais working out of province on a different blue book.

Maybe wrong.

The yellow house book is only for foreigners.

It was never meant to be for Thais.
