have been uttered more times than anyone can remember in the modern era, often by screen favourites such as Barbara Windsor and Ena Sharples. They're not in the least bit literal, and simply express varying degrees of disapproval. Regarding the latest comment, the UK isn't a gun culture in any shape or form, so the comment harks back to the days of capital punishment and the firing squad. Very common expression used by pretty much everyone's grandma. 

 

This colloquial muddle could be a real issue if the case was was brought to trial in California. Even more to the point is the question of whether "pedo-guy" is actually as outrageous an insult over there as it is on Vern's side of the pond, or whether it's viewed more as some sort of frat boy insult. "Family Guy" is an example of a show popular with college age kids that has a long history of pedophile jokes - hard to imagine these would have passed the censors in the UK. 

 

Actually variants of "stick it where it hurts" are commonly used in the US: "stick it where the sun don't shine" and "shove it up your a**" or simply "shove it"  All well understood nto to be literal or in any way sexual, just an emphatic and blunt way of indicating that the thing in question is of no value or unwanted. There was even a popular C&W song once called "Take this job and shove it".

 

"Should be shot" "string him up" etc are also common phrases in the US and likewise understood to be in no way literal. And while we don't usually say someone ought to have their mouth taped we have equivalent phrases e.g. "put a sock in it".

 

There is really no doubt or misunderstanding about any of these phrases in terms of what they actually mean and that they are not literal. They are blunt, arguably rude, but they are not references to anything sexual nor are they serious calls to violence.

 

Calling someone a pedophile, on the other hand, is not a phrase or expression in use. Just a very serious criminal accusation.

 

Vern has made no further comments since the one made immediately after Musk called him a pedophile and prior to Musk's apology. It is unlikely the media  haven't tried to get a comment from him so I think we can assume he is choosing not to say anything further. Musk has been similiarly tight lipped except for the apology. So in fact it is all over except the media keep trying to stir the pot.

 

In this instance, resorting to an interview with the elderly mother.

 

Let's all give it a rest, like the two protagonists already have.

Definitely. The Sun is hardly a proper newspaper, any kind of sleazy story is it's stock-in-trade. They're probably putting together a report on paedophilia in Thailand right now, especially with the added excuse of the teacher arrested earlier in the week. Musk did a real disservice by using this ugly slur in the context of such an all round positive story as the cave rescue.

Actually there is doubt in my opinion. He could have gotten the wrong data from the people responsible for the rescue operation. There was very little time and miscommunications can happen. I for one wouldn't automatically assume he did what he did for publicity. 

 

I bet a lot of other people and countries sent help that in the end wasn't used. 

 

The diver might be a hero. But I think he was wrong for saying that, and at the very least for phrasing it like that. It was uncalled for in my opinion.

No he doesn't. The word ass wasn't used. Also Vern was put on the spot when asked the question by a reporter. Answered the question as diplomatically as he could (he's just an ordinary bloke - not a diplomat) whilst remaining truthful. Yes, I'm sure that Vern regrets ever having spoken to that hack but he just told the truth. I'm sure that he echoed the sentiments of just about everyone on the rescue team.

 

The only thing that the Musk Rat has to be angry about is that his pathetic scheme to gain publicity for his failing company backfired...big time!

I would think by now the Musk lawyers have a plan of attack in place should Unsworth decide to sue at least in the US. And Unsworth might find an attorney willing to put up the expenses involved in the case even though he knows he might  lose just for the shear publicity it would entail.

I agree, and as i said Vern shouldn't have kicked this off, but maybe Musk did or said something during the rescue phase that wound the divers up. We will likely never know.

Musk didn't actually apologise to Vern personally. He made a half hearted, qualified apology, which was primarily aimed at his investors.

It literally means 'Child like guy'.  Like he accused him to act like a small child.

 

If you start adding letters like 'phile' to it to make it into 'Pedophile Guy', ok well then the meaning is what everybody assumed.

But without assuming and adding things (that are present in your mind) the comment was very mild.
