PHUKET: The search is underway this afternoon (July 30) for a child dragged out to sea by a strong rip current at Nai Yang Beach.

The missing boy, 11-year-old Supat Jampathong, a student at Wat Mongkolwararam School, was one of six friends playing in the shore break when they were overpowered by big waves and started being dragged away from the beach.

Two of the children were rescued by a local surfer, Norwegian national Terje Tonnessen, 37. The other three managed to scramble ashore by themselves.

Unsupervised beaches can be very, very deadly.

A Norwegian man has rescue two boys from strong surf at Nai Yang Beach. Three other boys managed to get back to the shore whilst other boy is still missing.

Sakoo Police were notified of the incident around midday that five Thai boys had survived being washed into strong surf, and either being saved or getting back to shore themselves, while the other Thai boy is still missing at Laem Po off Nai Yang Beach.

Police and rescue workers arrived where waves were up to two metres high.  Five boys were sitting on the beach. Lifeguards had already started searching for the missing boy.
