About to make a first trip to UK with our Thai/British son and while it seems quite clear that he would use the British passport to enter UK and the Thai one to re-enter Thailand but which one, or should it be both, needs to be shown on leaving the country?   

 

Never mind, just managed to work out how to use the search function and got my answer from Ubonjoe in another thread.

Also take your child's birth certificate, we were asked for this once at Immigration at BKK as we were leaving for the UK.

 

Why ??

 

Not saying that is not sound advice to carry it anyway but I see no reason for Thai immigration to ask for it. The birth certificate would have been part of the passport application process anyway.

Obviously a good idea to use just the one thread.

Exactly what my wife does, except for us an additional complication. Against my advice, she got her UK passport in her married name, whilst her Thai one remains in her maiden name. So for us it is

 

 

- Buy tickets in married name

- British passport with married name at both check ins.

 

- British passport in and out of UK at immigration desks.

 

- Thai passport in and out of Thailand at immigration desks.

 

There is sometimes confusion at the Thai immigration desk - entering and exiting the country on a different name to the plane ticket - but always OK once an explanation is given.

 

At one point it looked like we had to go to Thailand urgently and my wife's passport had expired. The Thai embassy in London told us she could just use the UK passport for everything same as me, i.e. get the same 30-day Visa exemption on arrival. I don't know if that is right or not, but that is what we were told.

She can actually enter Thailand on her expired Thai passport, but she would have needed to renew it in Thailand as she couldn't leave with it, neither could she leave using her UK passport as she hadn't entered with it, so they probably gave her accurate advice, best to renew her passport in Thailand though.

Yes agreed on the expired Thai passport bit, as long as it is a direct flight with no transit or stopover. In our case then Thai Airways the guaranteed option but Eva Air should also have been OK.

 

But in terms of the London embassy advice that she could use her UK passport exclusively - I recall someone saying once that Thais with dual nationality must always use their Thai passports when entering and leaving Thailand. So that is not true according to the embassy.

I had to go to the British embassy to get my passport authenticated for when I got married, I asked someone there why when I came in the country on that passport and Thai immigration saw fit it ok then. They also had no idea why and gave me the 'we know it's stupid but that's what they ask for' eyes.
