Officials on Thursday resumed their search of a forest in Sakon Nakhon's Phuphan district for a villager who has been missing since Saturday afternoon.

Forest officials, troops and police backed by two helicopters searched for Sompool Phumongchai, 59, until dusk Wednesday but failed to locate him.

Sompool went into the Phuphan National Park near Ban Na Kham Klang villge in Tambon Sang Khor with friends to collect mushrooms but strayed away from the group and disappeared.

Officials divided into 10 teams to scan the park but have as yet been unable to locate him. The operation has been hampered by continuing rains.

Sakon Nakhon governor Witthaya Chanchalong said officials had found evidence of someone sleeping under a tree and digging for edible plants and believed this to be the work of the missing villager.

The search operation was resumed at 8am Thursday with more than 100 officials taking part.
