Expensive helmet didn't save motorcyclist decapitated on Big Bike in Bangkok

Sanook showed pictures of the aftermath of a motorcycle accident near the Rama 5 road bridge in Nonthaburi yesterday. 

 

The CBR 650 was virtually unrecognizable - its wheels had both come off. 

 

Nearby was a good quality orange helmet. 

 

The head of the rider was found some way away. The torso was so badly injured that bones were visible. 

 

Athiphak, 18 from Lam Lukka, Pathum Thani was clearly dead at the scene. 

 

Witnesses told police that he had just exited the bridge heading in the direction of Bang Sri Muang when he lost control, catapulted and collided with a road direction sign.

and they concentrate on the helmet, not the fact the idiot was obviously going way too fast, why didnt they say the bike wasnt good enough and came apart. Hard enough trying to get people to even wear a helmet yet this idiot paper tells them the expensive ones are no good when it has nothing to with the helmet at all, it all revolves around an idiot driver that could not control the bike and it was what he hit at speed that caused the damage, these people are morons, kid this age shouldnt even be allowed to ride a bike that size.

It doesn't matter what gear you are wearing - hit a solid object at any speed over 30kph and your chances of survival are slim.

 

There are now too many (young) Thais getting access to larger motorbikes and they think they can ride them and have the skills because "they have been riding scooters" since 10yo, often a fatal error in thinking

This is a ridiculous story. Any accident that severe would result in major injury or death. Regardless of the quality of the helmet. When riding a bike in Thailand, it makes sense to use as high quality helmet as you can afford. The head is a precious thing. But, when one is decapitated, it really does not matter how good the helmet is, does it? This guy was obviously driving very recklessly, with no regard to his safety, and an absolute sense of denial of his own mortality. 

 

It is almost as if the entire society here is in denial, about the benefits of safety equipment, and helmets.

There is a CCTV clip of the crash.

 

18 years old with this type of bike! Almost guaranteed suicide mission particularly with the non-existent motorcycle training here. I wonder who paid for it.

   If someone is still alive without a head, it's a ghost. Even the best helmet is useless when you don't fasten your helmet straps and drive like an idiot. These bikes are killers for inexperienced drivers. RIP.

Good estimate!

200 km/h. That's what is estimated from the CCTV video (Khao Sod). The video is very blurry and rocky.

And the racer only one to two seconds before vanishing.

 

Brain?

Maybe a little puddle among the other body parts scattered.

 Even if he had buckled it on correctly he would have broken his neck, spine, ribs, limbs etc and all internals never mind the brain trauma

I know a guy who has been in hospital for 2yrs after a much milder crash

Someone posted about a cctv clip that estimated 200kph.

It's almost the same as terminal velocity. Hitting something at that speed only has one outcome.

Once you get a bike over 140/160kph another 40 kph doesn't actually feel much faster, it only shows if you have to brake or change direction and then you realise how fast you're going. For many, usually too late.

You can remain conscious and able to blink for up to 30 seconds after decapitation, experiments  done at turn of century.

The only thing worse than dying in a crash like that is probably not dying instantly and having to live with the pain

Same as falling off a cliff, it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom ?

Watch SBK and you'll see guys coming off bikes at very high speed and sliding many metres, while encased in high quality leathers and very high quality skid lids. 99% of them stand up at the end of the long slide. The big difference being no kerbs, road signs and lamp post to cause a sudden stop.

On a public road 50kph, or less, can be lethal/fatal on a bike no matter how good your helmet is.

nowhere in the thai language story does it say expensive helmet. it says good orange helmet.  bic c has orange full face helmets that may look nice

 

 

anyway he may have had a 1200 dollar shuberth helmet but it is na / non applicable in decapitation.
