PHUKET: A special two-day mass merit-making event will be held in Phuket next week for the 47 Chinese tourists who died in the Phoenix tour boat disaster, which capsized and sank off Koh Hei (Coral Island) on July 5.

The two-day event will be held at Saphan Hin on Wednesday and Thursday (Aug 22-23).

The event, being organised by the Phuket Provincial Office and the Thai-Chinese Tourism Association, is to specially mark 49 days since the disaster.

Too little, too late. Nothing more than veneer and an effort to woo back the Chinese. The God Almighty baht is what's behind this mass merit-making event.

A campaign to demonstrate that tourist safety is of prime concern would go much further in attracting Chinese and other tourists. The shattered confidence must be rebuilt.

I see it's going to be a multi-faith event. Presumably Buddhist and Catholic.

Its not looking like the budget is up to much for starters??

For starters? Talking of which, I assume you mean it won't cover the usual all-you-can-eat buffet?

How about making some real merit, like enforcing laws and having common sense on weather conditions? Nah, too hard. Okay, merit made: now back to business as usual.

Ohhh dear God...
when in a hole stop digging !!!

They should be spending the cost of that junket on improving safety,   not promoting mumbo jumbo rubbish.

I agree entirely, although getting anyone to think critically rather than trust some made-up deity is often like pushing string uphill.

My post (#3) was a play on the words "mass merit-making event".
